When planning a trip to Carson City, you can focus on cultural history or a nature outing. The topics range from Nevada’s coin and railroad history to a geological exhibit, along with a trail through the historic district and a short hike to Kings Canyon Waterfall. As you plan, consider which of these facets you want to shape your trip.

The Capitol and Museums: Discover Nevada’s History

The Nevada State Capitol is in the center of Carson City and is the second-oldest capitol building west of the Mississippi. It is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you plan a visit, check the opening hours before you arrive.

The Nevada State Museum in Carson City is housed in the former Carson City Mint building. Coins were minted there from 1870 to 1893. The Nevada’s Changing Earth exhibit includes a walk-through Devonian sea and complements the coin history with a geological look at Nevada.

In Battle Born Hall, the Trailblazing Nevada exhibit covers Nevada’s prehistory, the mining boom, statehood, early Carson City, and the 20th and 21st centuries. The topics are organized into five exhibit areas. When it opened in October 2018, the exhibit was free to the public on the second floor of the Capitol building.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum focuses on the state’s railroad history: it collects, preserves, and interprets locomotives, rail cars, artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia. This topic therefore encompasses not only technology but also visual materials and other records. The Historic Nevada State Prison in Carson City offers another historical connection; it opened in 1862, before Nevada became a state.

Historic Stops and Trails

The Kit Carson Trail is 2.5 miles long and runs through Carson City’s historic district. Stops along the trail include 19th-century Victorian homes, museums, and churches. This lets you choose among different types of historic sites as you plan, rather than focusing on just one building or topic.

You can get a printed map of the Kit Carson Trail at the Carson City Visitors Center, 716 N. Carson Street. You can include it in your plans if you want to explore the trail’s stops. The trail’s length also gives you a concrete idea of how far you’ll walk.

Kings Canyon Waterfall: A Nature Destination with a Short Hike

Kings Canyon Waterfall is a scenic, 25-foot cascade and is a five-minute drive west of downtown Carson City. From the Kings Canyon Trailhead, you can reach it via a short 0.25-mile hike. Parking is available at the trailhead, and the trail is clearly marked.

To compare trail distances, you can look directly at the two figures: the Kit Carson Trail is 2.5 miles long in total, while the hike from Kings Canyon Trailhead to the waterfall is 0.25 miles. When choosing a hotel, you can start with the focus of your trip: historic buildings and exhibits, stops along the trail, or a nature destination with a short hike.
