Accommodation in Wayne County
A mansion dating from the 1890s houses the Wayne County Museum; Wayne also has a historic commercial district, a planetarium, and a campus-wide arboretum. This gives you a range of ways to explore Wayne County on your trip: architecture and local history, regional plants, and events with seasonal dates.
History and Art in Wayne
The Wayne County Museum is housed in the Rollie Ley Mansion. Inside, you can see original woodwork and carvings, as well as historically significant items from around the turn of the century. From May through September, the museum is open on Sunday afternoons from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. School and private tours can be arranged by appointment. If you are planning a visit, note the seasonal hours; tours must be arranged in advance.
The Wayne County Courthouse in Wayne was built in 1899 in the Norman Chateau style. The Wayne Commercial Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes 68 buildings in the central business district. The buildings are associated with three main uses: agriculture, transportation, and commerce. The historic city center thus features both a single courthouse with its own distinctive architectural style and a larger commercial district with a variety of uses.
Art can also be discovered in Wayne in many forms. Blue Cat Gallery & Studio presents exhibitions that change every two months, featuring local, regional, and national artists, and offers visual arts workshops and classes; the program may change. The Wayne Sculpture Walk features eleven sculptures between 1st Street and 5th Street along Main Street and Pearl Street. Artworks and locations may change. The site of today’s Victor Park was formerly known as Brick Making Yard. The Majestic Theatre opened on December 10, 2010, as a nonprofit organization; its opening featured a free movie afternoon for everyone.
Planetarium, Arboretum, and Trails
The Fred G. Dale Planetarium is located on the Wayne State College campus in the Carhart Science Building, at the south entrance. It can show 500 million stars; regular shows are offered to the general public. Since showtimes may change, it is a good idea to check the current schedule before visiting.
The Wayne State College Arboretum offers a different perspective: it encompasses the entire campus and serves as a living museum for trees and plants of the region. It is also an affiliated site of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. The planetarium and arboretum offer different points of focus—one turns your gaze to the night sky, while the other showcases the region’s plant life.
In Wayne, the city and the Nebraska Department of Transportation jointly developed the Wayne trail. The first phase of Wayne’s walking and biking trail is known as the Will Wiseman Trail and was built in 2003. The Leila Maynard Trail offers about 6 miles of trail and was completed in fall 2020. The two named trails differ in the details described: the Will Wiseman Trail is noted for its first phase and year built, while the Leila Maynard Trail is noted for its approximate length and completion period.
Prairie Park, developed in 2025, adds a four-acre lake stocked for recreational fishing with more than 3,000 largemouth bass and sunfish. A kayak launch provides access to the lake. The park’s amenities may still be expanded.
Events Throughout the Year
The Wayne Chicken Show is held annually on the second Saturday in July and began in 1981 as an art show organized by the Wayne Regional Arts Council. Activities include a parade, chicken-themed contests, games, dancing, and entertainment; individual program items may change. At the Wayne County Fair, young people in the 4-H program can present projects they have completed over the course of the year. Possible exhibits include model rockets, baked goods, and sheep, as well as other entries; the selection varies from year to year.
Old Settlers Day is held annually in June around Father’s Day in Winside and dates back to 1915. The Wayne Farmers Market runs from June through October on the west lawn of the Wayne County Courthouse. It offers fresh produce, baked goods, and cut flowers. These events have different timing: Old Settlers Day takes place around Father’s Day, while the market runs for several months. It is worth checking the dates for specific events and market days in advance.
Bressler-Fest is another annual event: this concert series takes place in Bressler Park in Wayne and brings together local and regional bands with a range of styles and backgrounds. Performance dates may also change.
