Destinations differ by season, trail type, and focus. This makes it possible to tailor your trip planning to specific interests.

The nursery and Bessey history

The Charles E. Bessey Tree Nursery in Halsey was established in 1902. In 1915, the Halsey Nursery was renamed the Charles E. Bessey Nursery. The dates therefore mark two distinct milestones: the nursery’s establishment was followed by its later name change. The nursery is next to the Bessey Recreation Complex. If you are interested in local history, you can include both in your plans: the nursery’s history and recreational activities at the complex are distinct areas of interest.

The Bessey Recreation Complex and Campground is in the Sandhills of central Nebraska, on the Middle Loup River. You can swim in this river at the complex. As river conditions can vary, take them into account when swimming.

Trails, a lookout tower, and birdwatching

The paved Halsey Hike/Bike Trail connects Halsey with the main campground of the Nebraska National Forest-Bessey Ranger District. By contrast, the trail to the Scott Lookout Tower is a three-mile, one-way hiking trail. There are opportunities to observe various bird species at the tower. The direction matters when planning your route: the three miles are one way, not the total round-trip distance. The two trails differ in how they are described: one by its surface and connection between two places, the other by its hiking destination and one-way length.

Motorized trails and fishing

The Bessey OHV Trail System is one of the few motorized trail areas in Nebraska that are open to the public. It includes about 36 miles of trails; this figure is an estimate, and routes and conditions may change. If you plan to ride a motorized vehicle, check the Forest Service’s current guidance on public access before setting out. The type of activity also distinguishes these options: the Bessey OHV Trail System is motorized, the paved Halsey Hike/Bike Trail connects Halsey with the main campground, and the trail to the Scott Lookout Tower is for hiking. This lets you choose between a motorized ride, a paved connection, and a hike during your stay.

At Bessey Fish Pond near Halsey in the Nebraska National Forest, anglers can catch bass, sunfish, large catfish, and trout in fall and winter. So if fishing is to be a key part of your stay, the season is an important planning consideration. The pond also has a fishing pier with a paved access path. Check the current condition of the pier and path before your visit.

Season and trail direction answer different questions—when fishing can take center stage and which distance to allow for when hiking.
