Discover Fairbury: Museums, Railroads and Trails
Accommodation in Fairbury
Fairbury offers a variety of starting points for planning a trip: the history of the city and county, railroad heritage, recreational activities and nearby destinations. Choose the focus of your stay based on which of these aspects you’d like to explore further.
Museums and Historic Streetscape
The Fairbury City Museum preserves, exhibits and interprets the history of Fairbury, Nebraska, and Jefferson County. Donated historical objects offer insights into life in the county in earlier times. The museum is open year-round; special tours can be arranged by appointment.
The Fairbury Rock Island Railroad Depot has its own focus. Today, it is a railroad museum featuring artifacts and memorabilia. Visitors can see the restored entrance hall, ticket counter, waiting rooms and baggage areas, as well as a model railroad layout. Exploring Fairbury’s history this way leads from everyday regional objects to the railroad and life at the station in earlier times.
The Fairbury Commercial Historic District covers approximately ten blocks and 117 properties. Jefferson County Courthouse stands in its Courthouse Square and defines the district. Another distinctive detail contributes to the streetscape: nearly every street in the district is paved with bricks laid around 1916. These features give the historic district a clearly defined sense of place and period.
Recreation in Fairbury
The recreational offerings also vary considerably. Frontier Fun Park is a playground made entirely of wood and designed to resemble a pioneer town in the Wild West. The Fairbury Softball Complex features four lighted playing fields and two adjacent practice fields. The Fairbury Disc Golf Course has nine holes; mature trees, fountains, rocks and waterfalls shape the grounds.
Those who prefer to get around on foot will find a well-used walking path in City Park. The Little Blue River Trail offers a different route: walkers can use it to reach Fairbury City Park or cross the old Rock Island Railroad Bridge and walk through the Flathead Wildlife Management Area.
Nearby Destinations
Just outside Fairbury is Crystal Springs Park and Campground. Visitors can fish, watch wildlife and camp there. Rock Creek Station State Historical Park is also located southeast of Fairbury. Its 350 acres include prairie uplands, tree-lined creek bottoms and rugged ravines; the park has six miles of hiking and nature trails.
Rock Creek Station is also a destination for travelers interested in the region’s history. The station served as a stagecoach and Pony Express station, as well as a stop for travelers on the Oregon Trail and California Trail. Here, the landscape, trails and historic role are all part of the same park, while Fairbury’s own attractions offer a different focus.
Events and Travel Dates
Rock Island Rail Days takes place on the first weekend of June. Check the specific event dates before traveling. Every year during the holiday period around July 4, thousands of visitors come to Fairbury City Park to shop for goods from hundreds of vendors. If one of these events is the reason for your trip, tailor your hotel search to your planned dates and verify the event schedule before booking.
When choosing a hotel in Fairbury, the kind of trip you want can make the difference: city and railroad history, recreation in Fairbury, or a visit to the nearby landscape and trails. These areas of interest can help you tailor your search to your travel dates and your group’s interests.
