Cuming County: History and Experiences in Four Communities
Accommodation in Cuming County
Cuming County is explored through Bancroft, Beemer, Wisner and West Point. Visitor attractions span these four communities; according to the county’s visitor information, each is less than a 30-minute drive from the others. Cultural history, trails, golf and recreation spots offer a variety of ways to enjoy your stay. Dining options are also available in all four communities.
Cultural History in Wisner and Bancroft
The Wisner Heritage Museum is dedicated to Wisner’s shared heritage. It was founded in 1996 to preserve that heritage. Reconstructions and collections cover local businesses, churches, crafts, schools and sports, as well as household and everyday items. The exhibits span everything from institutions and working life to private life. Anyone interested in a community’s history will find a range of topics here rather than a single collection category.
Bancroft is home to the John G. Neihardt State Historic Site, dedicated by the state in 1976. The site includes a visitor center with a museum, exhibit area and bookstore, the Sacred Hoop Prayer Garden, and Neihardt’s historic writing cabin. The exhibits, garden and cabin each offer a different focus: in addition to a museum visit, the itinerary can include a historic site associated with Neihardt.
The Cuming County Historical Society Museum Complex includes a 1919 horse barn with a 50-foot-tall hipped roof. The complex also includes a depot, a Union Pacific combination car, a church, a one-room schoolhouse, a local history museum, and a building for tractors and historic machinery. The museums show the evolution from horse-drawn implements to gas-powered cars and tractors. Taken together, the buildings and objects offer insights into architectural styles, technology and local history.
Trails, River Views and Golf
The Wisner Trails System connects Wisner Central Park with Wisner River Park. The route is about 1.83 miles, or around 2.95 kilometers, on foot. Wisner River Park has ball fields and views of the Elkhorn River. The trail system thus connects two parks; at the destination, both the fields and river views are among the features described.
Associated with Wisner River Park are the Wisner Lions Club Rodeo, the livestock show and Thunder by the River Truck & Tractor Pull. If one of these events is a deciding factor for your visit, check the dates in advance.
Golfers will find the public Indian Trails Country Club 1.8 miles south of Beemer. The course has 18 holes and offers views of the Elkhorn River Valley. Amenities include a driving range, a short-game and putting practice area, a reception hall, tournament play and a bar. The facilities range from practice areas to tournament play; views of the river valley are another feature of the course.
Recreation Options for Trip Planning
Cuming County has eight parks. Neligh Park has an inclusive playground, and the Nielsen Aquatic Center is another recreation option. These destinations complement the museums and trails with additional possibilities to consider when planning your stay.
When choosing where to stay, it helps to match the towns to your planned visits: Bancroft is home to the historic site, Wisner to the museum and trail system, while the golf course is south of Beemer. West Point is also one of the communities covered by the visitor attractions; dining options are available in all four towns.
