Darby offers several distinct points of interest to consider when planning a trip: a non-motorized loop trail, parks and water activities, historic sites, and recurring events. If you’re looking for a hotel in Darby, first consider which of these themes will shape the purpose of your stay. The following places and dates offer specific guidance for your plans.

Trails, Parks and Activities

The Darby Trail System is a 3.5-mile loop trail for non-motorized use. It currently connects the Rodeo Grounds, River Park, Darby School and Darby Library.

River Park provides access on foot to the Darby Trail of Discovery and the Bitterroot River. The Richard Cromwell Memorial Rodeo Grounds are used for public events and horseback riding. The Town of Darby owns and operates the facility.

The Darby Skatepark has a concrete skating area with steps, ramps and a rail. Since the facilities may change, check the latest information about the skating area before planning a visit specifically for it.

Fishing in Darby is possible on the East Fork Bitterroot, the West Fork Bitterroot and the main stem of the Bitterroot River. In addition to the loop trail, several named waterways are potential fishing destinations during your stay.

Local History and Culture

The Darby Historical Ranger Station was built between 1937 and 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and local craftsmen. It was the first official ranger station in Darby. In 1991, it was converted into the Historical Visitors Center, where historic U.S. Forest Service objects are on display. The building’s construction, original function and later conversion make its history easy to follow.

The Darby Pioneer Memorial Museum is housed in one of the area’s first hand-hewn log cabins. Early settler Evelin Matteson had the cabin built in 1886. The museum displays historical artifacts and photographs about the lives of early settlers. Both the history of the building and the settler history presented there are central to the museum.

Sacajawea’s Rest Park is a small park between two retail buildings in downtown Darby. As a public space, it offers a different focus from the Ranger Station and museum, with their historic buildings and exhibits.

Events and Market

Last Fridays in Darby features music and art in Main Street Park on the last Friday of each month from June through August. Strawberry Days is an annual festival and benefit event in Main Street Park, hosted by the Darby Fire Department. The events follow different schedules: Last Fridays returns monthly during the summer months, while Strawberry Days is an annual festival.

The Christmas tree lighting, followed by Christmas caroling, takes place on the first weekend in December. If an event date is a deciding factor for your trip, check the specific dates in advance.

The Darby Farmers Market is located in Main Street Park, 106 South Main Street. Typical offerings include locally grown bedding plants, herbs and flowers, seasonal fruits and vegetables, baked goods, jewelry and flea market items. The seasonal produce and other product categories give you an idea of what makes the market another local point of interest alongside the events.
