Newton County: History, Mosaics and Prairie
Accommodation in Newton County
Newton County lies in southwest Missouri on the western edge of the Ozark Plateau. History and nature offer distinct highlights: in Neosho, a large-scale mosaic and historic buildings tell stories of the past; the George Washington Carver National Monument connects visitors with an important biography. Fish farming, prairie and seasonal events add to the ways you can spend your time in the area. When looking for a hotel, you can consider which of the county’s many sides you want to focus on during your trip.

Neosho also offers specific insights into the area’s history. The Newton County Historical Park & Museum is in historic downtown Neosho, the county seat. The grounds include an authentic log cabin from the 1840s and a restored rural schoolhouse from the 1870s. The two buildings date from different decades and add historic architecture to the view of the past.
The Neosho Mural is a 9-by-45-foot mosaic made of 61,000 ceramic tiles, each measuring one inch. It depicts local history from early settlement to the dawn of the Space Age and overlooks Big Spring Park. Fish farming, trails and nature watching
Founded in 1888, the Neosho National Fish Hatchery is now the oldest continuously operating federal fish hatchery in the United States.
