Odessa – Discover nature, the lake and history
Accommodation in Odessa
Odessa, Missouri, combines trails along Odessa Reservoir with activities at Odessa City Lake, local history and wine tastings. These themes offer different options for planning your trip. For the two trails in particular, it’s worth looking at their routes: one is a loop, while the other requires an extra stretch on the way back.
Trails along Odessa Reservoir
The Rocky Roots Trail is one mile long and forms a loop around the older of the two lakes on the Odessa Reservoir grounds. It was established in 2024. If you’re looking for a route that loops back to the start, you can consider the stated distance the total length of the loop.
The Raptor Point Trail, which opened in 2025, is also one mile long, but it does not loop back to the starting point. The return trip requires another mile on foot, so you should plan for a total of two miles. The trails therefore differ not only in their routes but also in their overall distance. The Raptor Point Trail also takes hikers near resident birds of prey, including bald eagles and ospreys. The Rocky Roots Trail, by contrast, focuses on the loop around the older lake.
Boating at Odessa City Lake
Odessa City Lake has a boat ramp, a dock, a pavilion and picnic areas. Boats may be used on the lake. This means the City Lake offers both facilities for boating and spots for picnicking. If you’re considering Odessa for its water activities, you’ll find specific options here for planning your day—separate from choosing a route on the trails.
Odessa’s railroad and local history
Odessa owes its origins to the railroad’s construction through Lafayette County in 1878. One place to explore local history is the Odessa Area Historical Society Museum, located at 203 South Second Street, in the south part of the Bank of Odessa. The exact address makes it easier to find your way around town without conflating a museum visit with the nature and water activities.
The Bowlan Hotel is also part of the city’s recorded history. It was moved from Mt. Hope to Odessa and rebuilt in its new location. Together with the railroad’s arrival, this offers a specific glimpse into Odessa’s development: its founding is linked to railroad construction in 1878, while the Bowlan Hotel’s history tells of a relocation and reconstruction.
Wine tastings and event dates
Odessa Country Winery offers wine tastings and tours. Its wines include semisweet to sweet grape and fruit wines. There is also a vineyard on site; its grapes have won first-place awards in statewide competitions. The winery adds its own distinct theme to the trails, lake and local history.
A 2021 city report described Puddle Jumper Days as an annual summer fair in Odessa, held on the first weekend in August. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the current event dates in advance.
