Blackwater’s local history can be explored through its railroad, two historic districts, and individual buildings. If you’re planning a stay and looking for a hotel, these topics offer different points of focus: the town’s early development, commercial and residential architecture, and a one-room schoolhouse with distinctive interior features. This can help you decide whether railroad or architectural history will shape your stay more.

Railroad and Early Local History

Blackwater was founded in 1887, when the Missouri Pacific Railroad surveyed the route of its “River Route” through the area. The original Blackwater Depot was built by the same railroad company in 1888. It served as a ticket office and telegraph office, as well as a station for handling mail and freight.

The dates are not interchangeable when establishing the timeline: 1887 marks the town’s founding in connection with the survey, while 1888 marks the construction of the depot and its railroad functions. This helps distinguish local history from architectural history.

Commercial and Residential Districts

The Blackwater Commercial Historic District is listed on the National Register in Cooper County, Missouri. It includes the 100 block of Main Street, excluding addresses 118, 120, and 122. Its boundaries are therefore limited to a specific block.

The Blackwater Residential Historic District includes parts of the 300 and 400 blocks of Trigg Avenue, the 300 block of Scott Avenue, and the 300 block of Main Street. It is recognized for its significance in the areas of community planning and development, as well as architecture, and includes Queen Anne- and Bungalow/Craftsman-style buildings. While the Commercial Historic District refers to a business district, the Residential Historic District focuses on housing and architectural styles. Its street sections are spread across several named areas.

Buildings with Different Histories

The West End Theatre building at 301 Doddridge Avenue was originally built as a Baptist church in 1905. Its original use therefore differs from that of the Blackwater Depot, whose functions were connected to railroad traffic.

Prairie Lawn School dates from the late 19th century and has one classroom. Its distinctive features include unique pressed-tin ceilings and walls. The building is now located at the corner of Trigg and Cooney and houses the Prairie Lawn School Antiques store. Check in advance whether the store is currently accessible.

The Blackwater Depot can be rented for private and community events. If you’re considering such a use, check the reservation details in advance.

The Name Blackwater

The place name Blackwater is derived from the river. According to tradition, Indigenous people named the river for the rich, black soil in the floodplains. Thus, a traditional interpretation of the landscape is among the topics that characterize Blackwater, alongside its architectural and local history.
