Explore Claiborne through several historical perspectives: Grand Gulf, Port Gibson, and the Port Gibson Battle Site represent different chapters of regional history. Church architecture and blues history add to these themes, while wooded trails and the loess bluffs bring the landscape into view. There are also different options to focus on when planning your trip: historic buildings, memorial sites, and nature experiences.

Traces of Settlement History

Grand Gulf Military Park includes Fort Cobun and Fort Wade. The Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church was moved to the park from Rodney, Mississippi, and restored in 1983. The Spanish House was built in the late 1790s and is one of two surviving original buildings from the former town of Grand Gulf. The park museum's collection includes historic objects from this town, once called Grand Gulph.

The Windsor Ruins preserve 23 fully intact and five partially intact columns. The Port Gibson Battle Site is located about four miles west of the historic town of Port Gibson in Claiborne County and covers approximately 3,400 acres. It is nationally significant because it had a direct and decisive influence on the Vicksburg Campaign. Within the site, the Shaifer House is the only surviving building from the pre-Civil War era. Built around 1840, it has been designated a Mississippi Landmark since 1985.

Churches, Music, and Remembrance

Much of downtown Port Gibson is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Church Street is home to eight churches of various denominations. A gilded hand sits atop the steeple of First Presbyterian Church. St. Joseph Catholic Church is the oldest surviving church in Port Gibson and features altar paintings by Thomas Healy. Temple Gemiluth Chassed is the oldest Jewish synagogue in Mississippi.

The “No Easy Journey” exhibit documents Claiborne County's civil rights struggle with photographs, texts, and archival materials. Port Gibson is also connected to blues history: blues singer Lil Green, whose real name was Lillie Mae Johnson, was born in or near Port Gibson in 1901. Every year, Port Gibson celebrates its history and culture with the Port Gibson Main Street Heritage Festival. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates in advance. Trails and Landscapes

The Rocky Springs section of the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail is near Port Gibson, Mississippi, is just over six miles long, and passes through gently rolling, wooded terrain. At Sunken Trace, visitors can explore the sunken trail on foot in about five minutes. There is parking for cars, picnic tables, a viewpoint or photo spot, and a trailhead. These are two different options: a short visit to Sunken Trace and a longer trail section at Rocky Springs.

Canemount Wildlife Management Area covers about 3,500 acres in the loess bluffs of Claiborne County near the Mississippi River. The observation tower at Grand Gulf Military Park also offers a view of the river. Alongside the historic sites, these places offer other landscape experiences, without combining the walks and the longer trail into a single route.

Historic Routes

In the 18th century, the Natchez Trace was an overland route that ran through Port Gibson along the eastern edge of the town. The Gibson's Landing Ferry is also part of the area's transportation history: established in 1802, it historically connected Port Gibson's inland farmers with the Mississippi River. These connections add another perspective to the history of the area, showing how Port Gibson was linked to earlier routes and river traffic.
