Mora: Cross-Country Skiing, Races and History
Accommodation in Mora
Mora combines cross-country skiing and events with cultural attractions. If you’re planning a trip with an overnight hotel stay, you can first decide whether to focus on sports or local history. Options range from groomed trails and running events to exhibitions and notable landmarks.
Cross-Country Skiing and Races in Mora
The Vasaloppet Nordic Center is on the northern edge of Mora and offers more than 13 kilometers of groomed trails, five kilometers of which are illuminated for night skiing. Skiers of all ability levels are welcome. The total trail length and the illuminated section offer two distinct points of reference for planning: the lighting applies to part of the trails, while the stated total length describes the entire groomed trail network.
Mora is also the site of the international cross-country ski race Vasaloppet USA. The Swedish Mile Trail Race and Family Fun Day is also held annually. It includes a timed 10-kilometer trail run, a 5-kilometer fun run, a children’s race, and family-friendly activities. Dates and programs may change; check the details if you’re planning a trip around this event. The course runs through the wooded areas around the Vasaloppet Nordic Center and uses its ski and fatbike singletrack trails.
Across the state of Minnesota, Vasaloppet USA provides infrastructure for the skiing community so its members can enjoy the sport year-round.
The Mora Classic Series adds a multisport series, combining ski, canoe, running, and cycling events completed within a period of twelve consecutive months. The Mora Motion Series offers opportunities to participate in shorter races throughout the year. The formats differ in sports and time frame: the Swedish Mile features specific running distances and a children’s race, while the Classic Series combines several disciplines and the Motion Series spreads shorter races across the year.
Culture and Landmarks
At the Kanabec History Center, historical topics are presented in different ways. The main building features exhibits on logging, medicine, and Ojibwe winter camps, as well as a kitchen from 1906. The Pole Building houses recreated storefronts for a dental office, a department store, and a blacksmith shop. Themed exhibits and recreated business interiors thus offer two distinct perspectives.
Mora’s landmarks include the Mora Klocka Bell Tower and a 25-foot-tall Dala horse, described as the largest in the United States. Both add other distinctive names and motifs associated with the town to the exhibits.
More Activities
The Mora Aquatic Center has a full-depth swimming pool, two slides with flippers, a drop slide, and a zero-entry pool. Alongside cross-country skiing and running events, the recreation options also include a swimming facility with a variety of pool and slide features.
This lets you plan your stay around the topics that interest you most.
