Freeborn County features a variety of natural landscapes. At White's Woods Park, natural woodland and prairie landscapes cover an area of 176 acres. They developed after the land was previously used as a farm. Several trails wind through the park, which also has two picnic shelters. The park thus combines a specific history of the landscape with woodland and prairie. If you’re looking to experience a variety of landscapes and trails outdoors, you’ll find both in one area here.

Nature Among Woodlands, Prairies and Lakes

The lakes offer a variety of landscapes to explore. Arrowhead Park includes about 60 acres of woodland along the shore of Freeborn Lake. Pickerel Lake Park is located on Pickerel Lake and offers views of the natural surroundings of a typical prairie lake. St. Nicholas Park borders Albert Lea Lake. Each description highlights a different feature: woodland along Freeborn Lake, views of a typical prairie lake landscape at Pickerel Lake, and St. Nicholas Park’s location on Albert Lea Lake. The lakeside landscape is therefore not a uniform backdrop, but is defined by specific connections between each park, its shore and its surroundings.

Several types of landscapes come together at Myre-Big Island State Park. Covering more than 1,700 acres, it features rolling hills, ponds and wetlands along the shore of Albert Lea Lake. Canoes and kayaks are available to rent for use on Albert Lea Lake. This offers a specific on-the-water activity in addition to exploring the park’s landscapes. Another way to experience the water is the Shell Rock River State Water Trail. It runs for 20 miles through central Freeborn County to the Iowa border. If you’d like to compare an on-the-water activity with a river route, you’ll find two different options here: canoes and kayaks for rent on Albert Lea Lake, and the Shell Rock River State Water Trail through central Freeborn County to the Iowa border.

Historic Sites and Local Stories

The grounds of the History Center of Freeborn County include a historic village with ten historic buildings. The Fair Museum in the Heritage Barn displays historical artifacts donated to the museum. Itasca Rock Garden was created in 1925 from the excavated soil of a vegetable cellar, after multicolored stones were discovered during the excavation. These places offer different ways to explore history: the village draws attention to historic buildings, the museum to donated artifacts, and the Rock Garden to a story of how it came to be, prompted by a specific event.
