Tofte on Lake Superior
Accommodation in Tofte
Tofte on Lake Superior combines lakeshore views with insights into the history of commercial fishing and a variety of trails and tours. When choosing a hotel, consider whether coastal scenery, local history, or outdoor activities will be the focus of your trip.
Lakeshore Views and Trails
At Tofte Bayview Drive, the Gitchi-Gami State Trail crosses Highway 61 back to the lakeside, where it offers views of the waters and shoreline of Lake Superior. The crossing at the road gives this section of the trail a specific connection to the area. By contrast, a walking path runs along the lakeshore in Tofte Community Park. As park amenities may change, check the current status when making specific plans. Tofte also has a network of cross-country skiing, hiking, and mountain biking trails. Access and conditions may change; check the current situation before setting out.
Fishing History in Tofte
The North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum is dedicated to preserving and sharing historical knowledge about commercial fishing and early ways of life along the shores and waters of Lake Superior. The museum is a replica of the twin fish house that stood in Tofte. The original building housed two fishing operations: those of Andrew and John Tofte, and Hans Englesen. The history of the building and the names of both operations together represent the local fishing history.
Parks and Celebrations
Tofte Park was donated to the community by Elizabeth Tofte in 1922. Its historic features include natural stone bridges, a watercourse, and a drinking fountain that is now used as a wishing well. Tofte Town Park is available for private celebrations: the community rents it out for weddings, reunions, and family gatherings. If you are planning an event there, confirm current booking terms with the community, as they may change.
The annual 4th of July Celebration includes the Tofte Trek, a 10-kilometer walk, sprint races for children, a one-mile youth run, and a 10-kilometer run. Race details may change from year to year, so check the program for the relevant event date before your trip.
