Van Buren County offers different perspectives on nature and history: dunes and beaches shape the Lake Michigan shoreline, while several trails take you through a variety of landscapes and offer different ways to get around. Museums, local products and seasonal activities round out the options. As you plan your stay, consider which of these themes best fits your travel plans.

Dunes, Shoreline and Forest Trails

Van Buren State Park has tall dunes, a sandy beach and forest trails along the shore of Lake Michigan. Shoreline conditions can change seasonally. The park also has a campground and a buoy-marked swimming area; their operation depends on the season and park conditions.

Porter Legacy Dunes offers a different landscape: this 48-acre nature preserve on Lake Michigan includes a 120-foot-tall wooded dune, a section of Dyckman Creek and habitat for migratory birds. The county therefore offers both a beach and dune area with forest trails and a preserve with a creek section and bird habitat as distinct nature experiences.

Cycling Trails and Other Routes

The Van Buren State Park Spur Trail runs for 4 miles on a paved route from Van Buren State Park to the town of South Haven. For planning purposes, the key feature is the direct connection between the park and town; access and trail conditions may be affected by maintenance work or weather.

The 14-mile Van Buren Trail State Park passes through open farmland, blueberry fields, dense brush and wooded areas. Its sections include 2 paved miles for bicycles and 12 miles of unimproved gravel, which are better suited to mountain bikes. The different surfaces can help you choose a route that suits the type of bike you plan to use; they may change during improvement work. A 12-mile section between 16th Avenue and Hartford is open to horseback riding. Use rules and seasonal conditions may change.

Kal-Haven Trail State Park follows a former railroad line between Kalamazoo and South Haven. The 33.5-mile cycling trail has a limestone and slag surface. The routes described therefore differ in both length and surface: from the paved path between the park and South Haven, to gravel and paved sections, and the former railroad line.

Cultural History and Wildlife Viewing

The Kal-Haven Heritage Trail project connects the trail with the region’s natural and cultural history. It includes 31 interpretive signs and an accessible mobile app. The app’s digital availability may change. At the Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery Visitor Center, a renovated exhibit hall explains the development of fish hatcheries in Michigan and the history of fish stocking. An observation platform overlooks an aquarium pond; what you can see there varies by season and conditions.

The Van Buren County Historical Museum is housed in the county’s historic poorhouse, built in 1884. The building is listed on the state historic register, and the museum spans four floors and displays historical objects. The site thus brings together the history of a building and an exhibit spread across several floors.

Seasonal Experiences and Local Products

There are also several options in winter: Timber Ridge Ski Resort offers downhill skiing. Van Buren State Park and the Kal-Haven Trail are recommended for cross-country skiing. Since these are seasonal activities, check operating conditions, trail conditions and weather before you travel.

Farmers markets, fresh produce, cider and jams are also among the county’s offerings. Seasonal U-pick options include blueberries, raspberries, corn and pumpkins; availability depends on the harvest and weather. The county also hosts a variety of festivals and events throughout the year. Dates and programs change annually, so it’s worth checking the details of individual events when planning your trip.

These differences can help guide your hotel choice: first consider whether you want to focus your trip on dunes and the shoreline, cycling and multi-use trails, cultural history or seasonal offerings.
