Albion offers several distinct starting points for planning a trip: the Whitehouse Nature Center, trails along the Kalamazoo River, cultural history and the Festival of the Forks. If you’re looking for a hotel in Albion, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your stay: are you mainly interested in nature, an event downtown or activities on the river? The following places and details can help you distinguish between these interests.

Nature and Trails in Albion

The Whitehouse Nature Center covers 140 acres dedicated to outdoor environmental education. The grounds are home to more than 400 plant species and 170 bird species. This makes it possible to appreciate the center both for its educational purpose and its biodiversity.

The visitor center includes a classroom, a wildlife observation room and exhibits featuring live reptiles and amphibians. Alongside its outdoor environmental education, the nature center offers both learning spaces and areas for wildlife observation and display.

The Albion River Trail is a paved trail more than 3.5 miles long along the Kalamazoo River. It is part of the larger Great Lake to Lake Michigan trail network. The North County Trail runs through downtown Albion and continues to the Ménwabek Meadow trailhead south of downtown. The routes differ in the landmarks described: the Albion River Trail is distinguished by its riverside location, paved surface and length; the North County Trail is described by its route through downtown and its destination to the south.

Activities on the Kalamazoo River

The Kalamazoo River in Albion offers opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, tubing and fishing. Albion also has several river access points. Since conditions can change at individual access points, it’s best to check the specific location before your trip.

Another recreational option is in Victory Park, which has an 18-hole disc golf course. This offers a different focus from the river activities mentioned above and gives you another point of reference for planning your trip.

Festival and History

The Festival of the Forks has been held in downtown Albion on the third full weekend of September since 1967. If a festival date is the reason for your trip, this recurring time of year can be a useful guide for planning.

The Gardner House Museum is a restored Victorian home dating from 1875. Five rooms are furnished as a 19th-century home; the remaining rooms house permanent and rotating exhibits. The house thus combines a depiction of a historic living environment with a range of exhibition themes.

The Gardner House Museum lists seasonal hours of 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays between Mother’s Day and Labor Day. Check before your visit to confirm that these hours apply to your chosen date.
