Baraga: State Park, Waterfront Trails and Marina
Accommodation in Baraga
Baraga offers several distinct points of interest for planning a trip: the Lake Superior shoreline at Baraga State Park, trails by the water, a marina and Capul Park. If you’re looking for a hotel in Baraga, you can choose your destination based on what interests you most: the lakeshore, a non-motorized route, boating facilities or a park visit. The following local features show how these options differ.
Lake Superior Shoreline
Baraga State Park is located on the southern boundary of the Village of Baraga, on Keweenaw Bay along Lake Superior. Its rocky shoreline is a quarter-mile long, and three concrete paths provide direct access to Lake Superior. These are two distinct features to help you get your bearings: the shoreline describes the character of the coast, while the paths provide direct access to the lake. This makes it possible to understand the park not just by its location on the bay, but also by the specific form of its shoreline.
Trails and Activities
A 2.5-mile non-motorized trail runs from Ojibwa Campground to Baraga State Park. The Waterfront Trail offers different points of reference: its first section connects Sand Point with the marina and runs through Baraga Waterfront Park. This section was built as Phase 1 and is maintained by the community. These differences are useful when choosing a route: for the trail from the campground to the State Park, its length, non-motorized nature and endpoints are what define it; for the Waterfront Trail, Sand Point, the marina and the route through Waterfront Park are the key reference points.
Baraga State Park also offers hiking, kayaking, camping and ORV-friendly recreation. ORVs may be used between the park’s campground and nearby ORV trails. Activities on land and water complement the trails around the park; for ORV use, the connection between the campground and the ORV trails is specifically noted.
Marina and Parks
Baraga Marina has moorings for approximately 28 recreational boats, as well as a boat ramp with a dock. In addition to the marina, a boardwalk and fishing pier offer views of the bay and an opportunity for shore fishing. These places have different features: the marina is defined by its moorings and boat ramp, while the boardwalk and fishing pier offer views of the bay and a chance to fish from shore. If you’re looking for boating facilities or shore fishing for your trip, you can distinguish these features easily.
Capul Park adds playground and picnic facilities to the waterfront attractions. It has play equipment, cornhole boards, a ping-pong table and picnic tables. Its focus differs from that of the waterfront trails and the marina: Capul Park centers on the park facilities listed above, while the other places involve the lake, trails or boats. Baraga therefore offers several specific ways to enjoy the outdoors.
