Maritime History and City Life

The New Bedford Whaling Museum houses the world’s largest collection of scrimshaw. Its permanent exhibition shows how the whaling industry shaped New Bedford and was connected to global networks. For a stay in Bristol, this is a distinctive cultural highlight: the collection and the city’s history meet here with maritime links to the wider world.

At the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park Visitor Center, you’ll find interactive exhibits, short films, maps and brochures, as well as recommendations from park rangers. The park offers free seasonal tours from late April or early May through October. As the annual schedule may change, please check the dates for your visit.

The New Bedford Black History Trail is a self-guided route exploring African American, Cape Verdean, Indigenous, West Indian and abolitionist history. Another cultural and historical landmark is the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament, founded in 1915 by four immigrants from Madeira.

In Fall River, the Maritime Museum at Battleship Cove covers the Fall River Line and the RMS Titanic through maritime history exhibits; the Titanic exhibit is known nationwide. As of September 2026, the USS Lionfish submarine was part of the ticketed Battleship Cove visitor experience; visitors could also see the 16-inch guns of the USS Massachusetts. Offerings may change. The Fall River Heritage State Park Visitor Center features films, permanent and temporary exhibits, and opportunities to explore the city’s history independently; operating details may change. The park is also home to a restored, hand-carved wooden carousel from the early 20th century.

On the Taunton River, Dighton Rock State Park offers fishing and canoeing, as well as walking trails. A museum explains the mysterious carvings on Dighton Rock. The museum is open seasonally or by appointment.

Forests, Waterfronts and Wildlife Watching

Freetown-Fall River State Forest encompasses 5,000 acres and 25 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding and dirt biking. The trails lead to Profile Rock, which offers views of the state’s South Coast. Trails at Massasoit State Park pass through cranberry bogs and pine forests; ponds offer opportunities for fishing. The campground and surrounding parkland also offer opportunities for swimming, canoeing, mountain biking, hiking and fishing. The campground may operate seasonally.

Slocum’s River Reserve protects more than 3,000 feet of shoreline along the Slocum’s River and has two miles of hiking trails. Rights-of-way connect them to a long loop through the Dartmoor Farm Wildlife Management Area. Trails in the Wildlife Management Area are not maintained by DNRT or the Trustees. Colman Reservation is approximately half wooded wetlands and half upland forest. Its notable natural features include a 200-year-old hemlock and a glacial erratic boulder about 15 feet across.

Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary protects beach, field, forest, pond and marsh habitats. Its trails offer views of the ocean and pond from numerous vantage points. Vaughan Memorial Forest has mature oaks, maples and Weymouth pines; deer are often seen there. The Green Dot Trail is the public access route to the forest. At Larson Woodland, great blue herons can be seen near the dam and spillway at Mechanics Pond. Anthony Lawrence Wildlife Preserve features open marshland with cattails and red-winged blackbirds.
