South Berwick: History and Nature
Accommodation in South Berwick
South Berwick can be planned from several different angles: historic houses, a museum connected to the history of the textile mill, a garden with river views, and a state park with its own trail network each offer a different focus. When looking for a hotel for a stay in South Berwick, consider whether cultural history, scenery, or walks are especially important to you. This makes choosing a theme for your trip a useful first step in planning.
Houses, Museum, and Local History
The Sarah Orne Jewett House in South Berwick is a National Historic Landmark. The Counting House Museum is the last surviving building of the Portsmouth Manufacturing Company textile mill. Together, the two sites represent different historical perspectives: a house recognized as a landmark and a surviving building from the history of a textile mill.
The first floor of the Counting House Museum features rotating exhibitions; it also houses around 10,000 historical records and photographs from South Berwick and the surrounding region. The exhibitions and historical collection offer two perspectives: changing topics and an extensive body of visual and written material relating to the town and region.
The museum is open from June through October on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., as well as by appointment. If you can’t plan a Sunday visit, request an appointment. Check the opening hours again before your trip.
A neighboring Greek Revival-style building serves as a visitor center. It has a museum shop, a program room, and a community room.
Gardens, Scenery, and Trails
The perennial garden at Hamilton House offers visitors a place to stroll and picnic with a view of the river. The Hamilton House grounds also include hay meadows, groves of trees, wetlands, and riverfront areas along the Salmon Falls River. They are home to numerous pollinators and native bird species, including grosbeaks, herons, and eagles. The natural setting therefore ranges from river views in the garden to several distinct landscape areas.
Hamilton House also features two whimsical murals. There are also antique furnishings and handcrafted decorative art objects collected by women. These details complement the gardens and scenery with painting, furnishings, and decorative arts.
Vaughan Woods State Park in South Berwick covers 160 acres in southern Maine, equivalent to around 65 hectares; its trail network extends for 3.70 miles. These two measurements describe different things: the figure in hectares refers to the area, while the mileage refers to the length of the trail network. For hikers, the trail length is the more immediately useful planning figure, while the area gives a sense of the park’s size. The garden and park thus offer different ways to include nature in your travel plans: a stroll and picnic at one, and a trail network at the other.
