Ellsworth: Discover Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Ellsworth
Ellsworth offers several distinct areas of interest for planning your trip: nature trails, museums, and themed tours. When looking for a hotel in Ellsworth, you can first consider whether you would rather spend your time outdoors, exploring historical collections, or taking a guided or self-guided tour. The formats also vary: alongside trails, there is a self-guided tour and seasonal summer tours.
Nature Trails and Tours
Woodlawn’s trails are used for walking and running, as well as cross-country skiing on ungroomed trails and snowshoeing. Conditions vary seasonally, so plan your specific activity with your travel dates in mind. Woodlawn Park is open daily year-round from sunrise to sunset. Check opening hours before your visit.
Birdsacre has six miles of interconnected nature trails in a 200-acre sanctuary with forest streams and fern-lined slopes. In summer, Birdsacre offers 45-minute tours featuring some of its “Ambassadors”; check the current schedule. The Victorian Homestead at Birdsacre is a museum and houses glass plate photographs by Cordelia J. Stanwood.
The Green Lake National Fish Hatchery Trails offer a self-guided tour with information about the stocking program and a view of young salmon. This format differs from Birdsacre’s 45-minute summer tours. Check the latest tour information before your visit.
Near Ellsworth is Branch Lake Public Forest. It covers 239 acres and currently has five marked hiking trails. The three miles of trails pass through various types of forest, along a stream, to a large wetland, and to the shores of Branch Lake. The number of marked trails may change as improvements continue; check conditions before your visit. Also nearby, the Brookside Trail follows a stream toward Branch Lake, with a short loop leading to a canoe launch. Trail conditions there may also change.
Museums and Collections
The Black House at Woodlawn contains all of its original furnishings and collections. This gives it a different focus from Woodlawn’s trails: here, the house’s original furnishings take center stage.
The Telephone Museum has an extensive collection on the history of telecommunications. It includes switchboards, switching equipment, telephones, tools, circuit diagrams, and photographs. The collection therefore includes technical devices and work tools as well as images and plans. Visitors can learn to work as a telephone operator there. Check the current arrangements for this hands-on offering before your visit.
The places mentioned offer different ways to spend your days in Ellsworth: trails with seasonally varying conditions, a sanctuary with nature trails, museums with specific collections, and guided and self-guided tours. When choosing a hotel, you can use these differences to help decide what to focus on during your stay.
