Riverfronts and Parks
French Falls is a 29.4-acre riverfront property in Jay that is open to the public. The French Falls Recreation Area includes trails through the property and to French Falls. The recreation area also has an approximately 10-acre area with playing fields and a parking lot.
Pine Island Park is open to the public and accessible via Riley Road. The park has a boat launch and short side trails to viewpoints on the Androscoggin River. The river is fished at several locations, including Pine Island. Check local conditions before setting out; applicable regulations may change for fishing.
The Androscoggin River section from Jay to Brunswick is accessible on foot or by carrying in or portaging a boat via Routes 140, 4, and 219, and Center Bridge Road. Check seasonal conditions before traveling to these access points. If you plan to fish, also check the applicable regulations.
Trails and Winter Activities
The Jay Recreation Area Trail System has ten trails and is suitable for picnicking, hiking, biking, and snowshoeing. Several of the hikes are easy to moderate. This gives you a range of ways to explore the area on foot or by bike; the difficulty rating applies to several of the hikes.
The Whistle Stop Trail is a year-round multi-use rail trail connecting Jay, Wilton, and Farmington. It is suitable for walking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. On the Whistle Stop Trail in Jay, old granite walls and culverts recall the area’s railroad heritage as well as North Jay’s nearby quarrying tradition.
While the Whistle Stop Trail is open year-round, Spruce Mountain Conservation Area is used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Since 1956, Spruce Mountain Ski Slope has offered family-friendly skiing on the banks of the Androscoggin River in central Maine. Thus, winter activities in Jay include both trail use and skiing at the ski slope.
Paper History and Local Events
Maine’s Paper & Heritage Museum aims to give visitors a sense of life in a papermaking community. Its mission includes collecting, documenting, preserving, exhibiting, interpreting, and illustrating the history of Maine’s paper industry. The museum complements outdoor activities with a cultural focus on the history of one of the state’s important industries.
The Jay Historical Society also offers a recurring local event: together with the local fire department, it holds a yard sale and museum tour every August. Check current municipal notices for specific dates.
