In Windham, local history and nature offer two distinct points of interest. In Windham Center, former public buildings and a former store recall past uses. Black Brook Preserve offers a different focus, with its trail network, old trees, streams, and diverse wildlife and plant life. When planning your trip, you can weigh whether you are more interested in the history of the town hall, school, and library or in the landscape of the preserve.

Town Hall and School: Former Uses

The Old Town Hall was built in 1833 as the first town hall. It was later converted into a small museum, a meeting room, and a research center. The building thus reflects an early municipal function and several later uses: administration, exhibitions, gatherings, and research. Planning visits to other historic sites should be considered separately; the Village School has its own access requirements.

The Village School is a one-room schoolhouse on the Village Green. It features a 19th-century classroom with desks, blackboards, and a wood stove. The exhibits also include old slates and McGuffey Readers. Here, the focus is on the furnishings of a single classroom, while the town hall is associated with the history of local government. The Village School is open to the public by appointment. Arrange your visit in advance and confirm the appointment before you arrive.

Village Green: Store and Library

The Old Grocery was built in the early 19th century and was originally a tailor shop owned by historian and writer William Goold. Today, the Village Green Old Grocery Museum recreates a general store from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and displays artifacts from the society’s collections. The building’s construction date and the period represented by the store recreation therefore belong to different historical eras.

The Old Town Library also brings together a building’s history and its later use: it was built before 1850 and served as the library of Windham Center until 1972. Today, it is the third museum maintained by the society. It contains furnishings from the original library as well as other exhibits. Unlike the recreated general store, the focus here is on a former library and its furnishings.

Landscape and Playground

The 105-acre Black Brook Preserve is a protected area in Windham Center. Its trail network includes gentle hills, old trees, and streams, as well as diverse wildlife and plant life. These features give the nature theme a concrete form: in addition to the trail network, waterways, tree cover, and the diversity of flora and fauna all contribute to the character of the preserve. Those exploring Windham with different interests in mind can compare these natural features with the historic buildings and their former uses.

Another option is Town Hall Park & Playground, on the Windham Center side of Windham Town Hall. Amenities include swings, slides, climbing structures, and a covered picnic area. This makes it distinct from both the historic exhibits and the landscape focus of the preserve: here, play equipment and a sheltered picnic area take center stage. These specific amenities can help you consider this place as a separate point of interest when planning your trip.
