Zachary: Parks, Market and History
Accommodation in Baker
Get to know Zachary, Louisiana, through three distinct attractions: sports and recreation facilities, the Saturday market, and the history of downtown. Each has its own character and uses. If you're planning a stay, you can first decide whether you'd like to focus on sports facilities and trails, a market visit, or historic buildings. Then search for hotels in Zachary to suit your travel plans; the following highlights will help you decide what to explore during your visit.
Parks and Recreation
The city-operated Zachary Youth Park Complex spans 33 acres. Zachary Youth Park has baseball and softball facilities, six artificial turf fields, two T-ball fields, a high school softball field with a locker room, and two baseball fields for high schools and middle schools. There is also a playground, picnic areas, and a half-mile loop trail. Sports fields, a walking trail, and places to take a break are all found within the same park. The indoor facility includes three batting cages and two pitching lanes.
The BREC Zachary Community Park is directly adjacent. Its recreational facilities include ponds, nature trails, a loop trail, sand volleyball courts, pavilions, a skate park, and a splash pad. The adjacent BREC Community Park also has three fishing ponds, an outdoor basketball court, paved walking paths, and two dog parks. The parks offer different attractions: baseball and softball are the focus at Zachary Youth Park, while the BREC park adds trails, fishing ponds, and other recreational amenities. If you plan to visit specific facilities, check their current operating status with the operator.
Saturday Market Downtown
The Zachary Community Farmer’s Market is an open-air market downtown, held on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is located behind Zachary City Hall in HugYourPeople Park, at Lee Street and Virginia Street. Farmers from the surrounding area sell fresh produce, while local artisans offer handmade goods. Food and handmade products come together in one place. If a market visit is part of your plans, confirm the date and hours in advance, as market details may change.
Local History Around Main Street
The Zachary Railroad Depot is the oldest building on Main Street and was built in 1894. It survived the Great Fire of 1903 along with a few houses, while much of Zachary was destroyed. The construction date and the fire mark two distinct moments in local history: the depot dates to the late 19th century, and the fire significantly changed the town a few years later.
The Zachary Downtown Historic District encompasses eight buildings across two blocks and offers a glimpse of small-town life from the late 19th century through the 1960s. The buildings frame a stroll along “Main Street USA.” The Zachary Historic Village includes, among other buildings, three houses, a barn, a carriage house, a pavilion, the Railroad Depot, and the Old Town Hall with its adjoining firehouse. Here, you'll encounter a variety of building types in a historic part of town.
The Old Town Hall Museum collects and interprets the history of The Plains. It preserves an extensive archive of property records and genealogical information and is located on Virginia Street in Zachary. Visits are available by appointment Monday through Thursday; arrange your visit in advance.
At the entrance to Zachary Historical Village is the tree-lined HugYourPeople Community Park, a memorial park with a train-themed playground. It was officially dedicated on May 18, 2019. This memorial site and playground add another dimension to the Village's historic attractions.
