The Dawkins Line Rail Trail gives Breathitt County a distinctive starting point for planning a trip: The 36-mile trail runs from Hagerhill in Johnson County to Evanston in Breathitt County. Forests, a historic river channel, and traces of different eras also shape the county. You can plan your stay around outdoor activities, landscapes, or history.

Dawkins Line Rail Trail and Hiking Trails

The Dawkins Line Rail Trail is open to hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. The first 25 miles of the trail include 24 trestle bridges and the 662-foot-long Gun Creek Tunnel. These structures provide distinctive landmarks along this section; the tunnel and bridges are within the first 25 miles described. Access is an important consideration for the section leading to Evanston: It is accessible only from Breathitt County because Tip Top Tunnel is not open.

A 0.9-mile hiking trail leads from the mouth of Boardinghouse Branch Hollow to a fire tower on the hill, gaining 660 feet in elevation along the way. These figures indicate a different scale from the Rail Trail’s 36 miles. If you are considering different types of outings for your stay, you can choose between a longer route for hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders and a shorter trail with a stated elevation gain.

Forest Landscapes and River History

In southeastern Breathitt County, the Paul Van Booven Wildlife Management Area encompasses more than 2,000 acres of reclaimed surface-mining land and forest. The combination of these two landscape features defines the area’s description. Robinson Forest is part of the mixed mesophytic forest region and contains some of the least disturbed watersheds in eastern Kentucky. These descriptions highlight different aspects of the landscape: reclaimed land and forest on the one hand, and forest region and watersheds on the other.

Panbowl Lake is also connected to the history of the Kentucky River. The lake lies in the former river channel, after the Kentucky River was rerouted in 1963. This dated event makes a change in the river’s course a concrete part of Breathitt County’s landscape history.

Archaeology and Regional History

The Kragon archaeological site contains evidence of settlement during the Woodland and Fort Ancient periods, from 1000 BCE to 1200 CE. Covering approximately 3,500 square meters, the site offers insights into Fort Ancient customs, skills, and daily activities. This time span and range of aspects of life provide an approach to history that goes beyond individual artifacts.

The Morris Fork Presbyterian Church and Community Center was established between 1927 and 1960 as the Presbyterian mission in Morris Fork grew. Its development therefore belongs to a specific period in local mission history. Honey production is another historical highlight: In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Breathitt County led Kentucky in this field.

Planning Your Stay

Douthitt Park is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Check the official hours again before your visit. The Breathitt County Museum is in Jackson. If you plan to visit, check in advance for current visitor information.

When choosing your outings, you can consider the themes separately: The Rail Trail offers a long route with trestle bridges and Gun Creek Tunnel, while the trail to the fire tower is described with its own length and elevation gain. Forests, the former course of the Kentucky River, and historic sites complement these outdoor highlights with landscape and cultural history. This lets you plan your trip around whichever of these aspects interests you most.
