Derby offers several distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: city parks, trails for outdoor activities, a water park, dinosaur experiences and historic sites. When planning your days, you can first consider which of these interests matter to you. The following places and facilities offer specific points of reference.

Parks and Trails in Derby

Derby’s park system includes more than 500 acres of parkland, 20 developed parks and 14 green spaces. Individual facilities and figures may change. The total acreage describes the park system, while individual sites offer different amenities: Decarsky Park has a dog park and four softball and youth baseball fields. If you’re looking for a dog park or ball fields as you plan, these are the specific features to note.

High Park has a fishing pond and an amphitheater, as well as more than two miles of hiking and biking trails. Derby as a whole has more than 25 miles of hiking and biking trails, and the trail mileage may grow with future expansions. This gives you two different scales to consider: the trails in High Park and the trail network throughout the city. Madison Avenue Central Park adds an accessible playground for everyone to the selection of parks. Each of these sites therefore has a distinct focus, rather than offering the same amenities.

Water, Dinosaurs and Skateboarding

Rock River Rapids is a regional water park in Derby. The facility includes concessions, lockers, a bathhouse and a gift shop. The water park operates seasonally; its operating details and services may change. If you plan to visit, check the information for the relevant season in advance.

Field Station: Dinosaurs features more than 40 life-size dinosaurs. Its attractions include a Raptor Maze with three life-size Velociraptors, as well as a hands-on fossil dig site. This gives visitors several distinct points of interest: a dinosaur exhibit, a maze and a fossil-digging activity. Exhibits and activities may change.

Derby Skate Park has stairs, rails, banks, a four-foot-deep bowl and numerous street-skating features. Its specific amenities make the skate park a distinct attraction, separate from parks with trails, ponds or playing fields. If you’re weighing different activities for your stay, you can consider the skate features, dinosaur attractions and water park as clearly distinct options.

School History and Events

The Derby Public School and Historical Museum building was built in 1924 as a K–12 school. From 1924 to 1953, it was Derby’s only public school. In 2014, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Its construction date, former use and years as the city’s only public school give the site a specific connection to the city’s school history.

Another historic point of interest is the Arkansas River Crossing monument in Warren Riverview Park. The history of crossing the Arkansas River and its bridges is also among Derby’s historic themes.

If you’re planning your trip around an event, Smoke on the Plains may be of interest: the 2027 edition, announced for that year, is a free community festival in High Park featuring barbecue, live music and family-friendly activities. It also includes a barbecue competition. The venue and format may change. If you’d like to include the festival in your plans, check the dates and details for the relevant edition in advance.
