Baldwin City: History, Art and Events
Accommodation in Baldwin City
Founded in 1858, Baldwin City has a unique, well-preserved historic downtown. Galleries, live music and theater are part of the local arts scene, while public murals add to the cultural landscape. History, art and events offer different focal points for planning your trip.
History, Collections and Art
Old Castle was the first home of Baker University. The building houses artifacts related to the early history of Kansas, as well as the history of the Methodist Church and Baker University. The Quayle Bible Collection is located in the Spencer Wing of Collins Library. Blood’s Grocery was located in Palmyra, a stop on the Santa Fe Trail, between 1857 and 1862.
The Holt-Russell Gallery is located in historic Parmenter Hall. It features art by students and faculty, as well as local, national and international artists. Clarice L. Osborne Memorial Chapel also has a special history: it was moved stone by stone from the village of Sproxton in England.
The Chapel has specific visiting hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; visits on weekends and evenings are by appointment only. Tours of the Chapel are available to visitor groups of ten or more by prior arrangement. The tour policy and visiting hours are two separate conditions. Check the hours before your trip, and arrange visits outside the stated hours in advance.
Events and Dates
The Maple Leaf Festival began in 1958 as a community event. It is a two-day event held on the third full weekend in October. The program includes more than 300 arts and crafts displays, a quilt show and specialty foods. Since these are recurring event details, check the dates for the relevant year before your trip.
The Third Friday Markets feature vendors, open shops, live music and activities for all ages. Individual activities vary by date. If you are traveling for a specific program item, check what is offered on that particular date. In the calendar, the Maple Leaf Festival’s October weekend and the date-dependent Third Friday Markets therefore provide different timing cues.
City Park and Outdoor Activities
Sullivan Square is a city park in downtown Baldwin City. The Aquatics facility has a 30-foot slide. Since facility features can change over time, it is a good idea to check the facility information before visiting. Visitors can explore the Ivan L. Boyd Arboretum using the university’s arboretum guide.
For the Maple Leaf Gravel Grind, route options of 16, 40 and 70 miles are listed for 2026. Dates and routes may change from year to year, so check the information for the relevant year before your trip. The three route lengths offer a specific choice of distances, without implying a walking time or difficulty level.
The Black Jack Ruts are east of Baldwin City in Kansas and are a nearby attraction outside the city itself. There, an approximately quarter-mile gravel path runs through and alongside ruts up to 15 feet wide and 4.5 feet deep. The path length is a different measure from the Gravel Grind route options: here, a single short path is described, while three routes of different lengths are available there.
