Warren County: Nature, Trails, and History
Accommodation in Warren County
Warren County offers reasons to travel centered on landscapes, history, and culture. Paved trails and former rail lines, prairies and wetlands, woodland preserves, museums, and events give your trip a range of possible focuses.
Prairies, Woodlands, and Waterscapes
The 16.5-mile paved Great Western Trail preserves remnants of prairie and wetlands, including some of Iowa’s endangered plant species. Along its route, it passes the site of Lida and the location of the munitions train accident and fire near North River; it also runs through Churchville Prairie. The trail thus connects natural landscape remnants with notable places and historical themes.
Banner Lakes at Summerset State Park was established in 2004 on the site of a former coal mine. The southwestern 140 acres of Rolling Thunder Prairie State Preserve have never been plowed; high-quality prairie plant species grow there. These details offer insight into different landscapes and their history, from former mining to preserved prairie.
Woodland Mounds State Preserve encompasses 340 acres of upland and bottomland forest that provide habitat for numerous wildlife species, including neotropical migratory birds. A series of cone-shaped earthen mounds lies along the ridge. They are associated with burial sites or religious ceremonies of the Woodland culture.
Annett Nature Center is located in the 160-acre ANC Park on a hillside above a six-acre pond and a ten-acre wetland. A seven-mile network of hiking trails passes through forest and wetlands to an observation tower. Kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, and fishing are available at Lester Pond in the park.
