Hamilton County: Art, Lakes and History
Accommodation in Hamilton County
On a trip to Hamilton County, you can focus on culture, scenery and active pursuits. Travel Iowa places Jewell and Hamilton County in the “Lakes & Land” travel region. The options range from public art and architecture to lake and trail activities, museums and film. You can plan your trip around whether you prefer to spend time outdoors, learn about local history or combine different themes.
Art, Water and Activity
The Downtown Art Walk is free to visit year-round. Murals, sculptures and public art installations transform the streets into an outdoor gallery. The range of art forms gives the walk its own character: you’ll encounter not only murals, but also sculptures and installations in public spaces.
For a different way to experience the area, the paved JewEllsworth Trail connects Main Street in Jewell with Delphi Street in Ellsworth. It crosses several waterways on bridges, including the Skunk River. Its named endpoints and crossings define the route; no distance or travel time is specified. If you’re planning to cycle, you can consider the trail as a connection between the two streets.
At Little Wall Lake, visitors can spend the day kayaking. The natural lake covers 249 acres and is 13 feet deep. These figures give a concrete sense of the lake’s size, while kayaking offers an activity for a stay by the water. Another sporting highlight is Briggs Woods Golf Course: the par-72 course measures just over 6,500 yards from the back blue tees. This distance applies specifically to those tee positions. The course opened for play in 1971.
Architecture, Museums and Film
Several places offer different perspectives on local history. The Jane Young House was built in 1873 and today serves as a place to learn about local history. Kendall Young Library is an architectural landmark in the Beaux-Arts style; Kendall Young donated it to the community in 1896. These two buildings bring together a specific construction date and a named architectural tradition with different historical functions.
At the Historic Village at Wilson Brewer Park, the depot serves as a museum. Its historical artifacts include items from Webster City and Hamilton County, as well as artifacts of Indigenous peoples of North America. The Jewell History Museum adds to this historical offering with exhibits and programs that help visitors understand and learn from the past. The museums therefore have different focuses: the depot presents historical collections, while the museum in Jewell also offers programs exploring the past.
The Webster Theater is a restored Art Deco movie theater in downtown Webster City. Its program includes current first-run films; if you’re planning a specific movie outing, check the schedule. Hamilton County Speedway also offers a historical connection, without requiring you to plan around a current race date: the racetrack was founded in 1910 and is considered one of the oldest dirt tracks in the United States.
Programs, Nature and Tastings

Examples included Dutch oven cooking, beekeeping and shed hunting. The topics range from cooking and beekeeping to a very different way of engaging with nature.
