Clinton on the Mississippi: Parks, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Clinton
Clinton is located on the Mississippi River in eastern Iowa. The city combines river scenery with trails, nature and educational offerings, as well as theater and history. This gives you several options when planning your trip: river views and scenery on one hand, and cultural and recreational activities on the other.
The Mississippi and its trails
The 65-acre Riverview Park overlooks the Mississippi River. The park has a public boat ramp and a bike trail. A longer section of the Discovery Trail runs along the upper edge of the river levee there. At one trailhead, the path crosses the flood gates toward Joyce Island. Riverview Park thus brings together river views and a variety of trail connections.
Heights, nature and routes at Eagle Point Park
Eagle Point Park sits on high ground overlooking the Mississippi. Serpentine Drive is a 1.8-mile loop through the park. The park also features the Eagle Point Park Disc Golf Course, a par-60 course.
At the park’s south entrance, the Soaring Eagle Nature Center offers environmental and educational programs. The nature center has about 3 miles of trails through wetland, forest and prairie habitats. The approximate trail length refers to these trails, while the 1.8 miles describes the Serpentine Drive loop. For nature enthusiasts, the habitats and programs offer a different focus from the park route or disc golf course.
Culture between lumber history and theater
The Sawmill Museum is located in Clinton’s Lyons District. Its permanent exhibit tells how wood is processed from a living tree into a finished product. The museum also houses a working early-20th-century sawmill. Together, the exhibit and sawmill connect the history of wood with its processing.
The Castle, a stone tower built by the WPA in the 1930s, stands in Eagle Point Park. A spiral staircase leads to an observation platform. Flannery School is the last surviving one-room schoolhouse in Clinton County. These two structures represent different historical themes: an observation tower and a preserved schoolhouse.
The Clinton Showboat Theatre presents professional theatrical productions aboard a restored paddlewheel riverboat. The nonprofit Clinton Area Showboat Theatre group was founded in 1988 to stage theatrical productions. The theater and its founding history add the performing arts to the museum and architectural themes.
Recreation and learning
Riverview Pool has a swimming pool, a non-swimmer pool and a diving pool, as well as three slides and two diving boards. The Felix Adler Discovery Center is Clinton, Iowa’s children’s museum, where children and families learn through play. The two facilities have different focuses: one offers swimming and diving activities, while the other combines learning with play. The recreational options described thus range from park trails and nature themes to pools and a children’s museum.
