When choosing Mason City for its cultural highlights, visitors can distinguish between architecture, connections to film and music, public art and museum visits. The influence of Frank Lloyd Wright is especially prominent: it can be seen in named buildings, on a self-guided tour through parts of the city, and in some murals. The Charles H. MacNider Art Museum adds a distinctive attraction of its own.

Architecture in Mason City

The Historic Park Inn in Mason City is the last hotel in the world designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The Rock Crest-Rock Glen Historic District is home to the world’s largest contiguous collection of Prairie-style architecture. Those interested in Wright’s influence can also visit the Stockman House; the visit offers a firsthand look at his architecture and influence on Mason City. Another way to explore is the self-guided Architectural & Historic Walking Tour, which takes you through downtown and historic residential neighborhoods.

Tours and Museum Visits

At Music Man Square, visitors can take tours of a replica of a 1912 street designed to resemble the one in the film The Music Man, as well as guided tours of Meredith Willson’s Boyhood Home. Unlike these tours, the Architectural & Historic Walking Tour is self-guided. This lets you choose between exploring on your own and the available guided visits.

For the 2026 tourism season, Music Man Square is open Tuesday through Saturday, except holidays, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., March 3 through October 31. If you travel in a later year, check the applicable opening dates again.

The introductory tour at the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum features its permanent collection of American art and Bil Baird puppets. It complements the architecture and tour offerings with an introduction to art and puppets.

Public Art

River City Sculptures on Parade is an outdoor sculpture exhibition presented year-round in downtown. The free, self-guided tour also begins downtown and takes you through the Cultural Crescent. Separate from this are the murals and street art in Mason City, including designs inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. Maps of these murals and street art are available at the Mason City Visitor Center. When planning, you can choose between a sculpture tour and exploring the murals and street art.

Nature and Finding Hotels

For nature-related activities, the nearby Lime Creek Nature Center is located north of Mason City. It features exhibits, live and preserved animals, and a library on natural resources. Its focus differs from the offerings related to architecture, film and art: the center focuses on nature and natural resources.
