Discover Carroll: Trails, History and Culture
Accommodation in Carroll
Carroll brings together a range of interests for travelers: nature and outdoor activities, local history, sports, and stories of craftsmanship. You don’t have to turn them into a single set itinerary. First decide whether trails, historic sites, or a particular event should shape your stay.
River Landscapes and Trails
Whiterock Conservancy’s River Campground provides access to more than 40 miles of trails. It sits on a bend of the Middle Raccoon River, among sandstone outcrops and a resident colony of cliff swallows. This brings together trail access with a distinctive river-and-rock landscape. If you choose to mountain bike or ride horses on Whiterock Conservancy’s trails, a trail pass is required; factor this requirement into your plans.
The Sauk Rail Trail offers a different focus: it connects Swan Lake State Park with Blackhawk Lake State Park. In Carroll, it passes through a city park and is directly accessible from there. The trail allows cycling, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and nature observation. Its range of options makes it appealing for different plans: you can choose the trail for exercise or make nature observation your focus, rather than limiting it to a single recreational activity.
At Roadside Sculpture Park, you can picnic among several unique sculptures. The sculptures give your outdoor break an artistic setting.
Buildings, History and Sports
The Carroll County Historical Museum is located in the former Carnegie Library Building. The Carroll County Historical Society maintains exhibits in the Schoolhouse and the Log Cabin in Graham Park. This places a former library building serving as a museum alongside two other, explicitly named exhibit sites. The different locations offer tangible points of reference for local history.
In Carroll, you can tour the renovated Chicago at Northwestern Railroad Depot and explore its grounds. Both the depot building and its outdoor grounds are part of the visitor experience. Merchants Park adds a baseball connection to the historic sites: the stadium was built in 1949; the venue is also linked to baseball through the Carroll Merchants team and the MINK Collegiate Baseball League.
A July Event and Stories of Craftsmanship
The Carroll County Fair is an annual event. It takes place every July at the Carroll County Fairgrounds in Coon Rapids. If you want to plan your trip around the fair, check the specific event dates in advance.
Crafting methods also have their own stories. Iowa Legendary Rye makes its Original Prohibition Era Rye in small batches, following moonshiner Grandma Lorine Sextro’s original recipe. At Carroll Brewing Co., the taproom is located in a renovated power plant originally built in 1899. The building thus brings a specific history of construction to the place described as the taproom.
Santa Maria Vineyard & Winery makes some of its wines from grapes grown in its own vineyards less than 10 miles from the winery in Willey, Iowa. Together, these examples illustrate different connections: a recipe passed down over time, a taproom in a historic power plant, and the origins of some of the grapes used to make the wines.
