Tipton County offers different ways to approach a trip: history, historic architecture, and outdoor activities. The Kelley Agricultural Historical Museum is located in Sharpsville, Indiana, in Tipton County. It sits on a 125-acre site that has been restored to reflect the splendor of the early 1920s. This brings into view not only the museum’s history, but also a site with a distinct character from a particular period.

History and Architecture

The Tipton County Courthouse combines a precise building history with a specific architectural classification. Completed in 1894, it was designed by Adolph Scherrer in the Romanesque Classical Revival style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 and restored from 1988 to 1991. Its completion, inclusion in the Register, and restoration mark different stages in its history.

The Tipton Courthouse Square Historic District features examples of the Italianate and Romanesque Revival styles. Alongside the classification of the Courthouse itself, the District thus offers two architectural styles as topics in local architectural history. The Tipton County Historical Society was founded in 1921. The Union Traction Company Depot is also part of the area’s history: it was an important transportation link for Tipton. Together, these institutions and transportation add further historical perspectives to the area’s building history.

Parks and Outdoor Activities

Tipton City Park covers 30 acres and is located on the south side of the city. A pedestrian bridge crosses Cicero Creek in the park. The public Tipton Municipal Golf Course, an 18-hole course, is located directly next to the city park. Bill Diddel designed the first nine holes in 1935 and the second nine in 1964. The two design dates show that the course’s two halves were developed in separate stages.

Sharpsville Park offers a different focus. It is located on the site of a former high school, whose original gymnasium still stands. Amenities include a pavilion with tables and benches, as well as outdoor grills available for use. There is also a nine-hole disc golf course. The parks offer different features: the bridge over Cicero Creek and the neighboring golf course are among the features described at Tipton City Park, while Sharpsville Park combines the history of a former school with outdoor recreational activities.

Farmland and Local Food Specialties

Tipton County consists mostly of farmland. Groomsville Popcorn has been grown on the family farm for five generations. The Tipton County Pork Festival is known for its juicy, one-inch-thick pork chops. These connections show two different aspects of agricultural themes: growing a product over generations and a specialty known at the festival.

Planning Your Trip

For agricultural history, the museum in Sharpsville is a clear focal point; if you want to combine golf with a park, Tipton Municipal Golf Course is located right next to Tipton City Park. The Courthouse and Historic District represent architectural history. You can plan your search around the interests that shape your trip.
