Scottsburg offers a variety of starting points for a stay: The Knobstone Trail offers a hiking route of about 7 miles, the Scott County Heritage Center & Museum offers a visit with set opening hours, and the Courthouse Square offers history and architecture. The parks also offer different highlights—from a lakeside walking path to a seasonal splash pad. If you’re looking for a hotel in Scottsburg, first consider which of these themes you want to define your stay.

Hiking on the Knobstone Trail

The section of the Knobstone Trail between the Elk Creek and Leota trailheads is about 7 miles long. It includes ridges, valley floors and wildlife habitats. For your hiking plans, both the approximate distance and these landscape features provide tangible reference points. The Leota Trailhead of the Knobstone Trail is accessible from Interstate 65 via Exit 29. The access route continues via S.R. 56, Zion Road, Stagecoach Road, Leota Road and Saylor Road; a gravel access road then leads to the trailhead. For planning, it is important to distinguish between two pieces of information: the approximately 7 miles refer to the section between Elk Creek and Leota, while the list of roads describes the access route to the Leota Trailhead.

Museum and Courthouse Square

The Scott County Heritage Center & Museum is located at 1050 South Main Street in Scottsburg. It is open Tuesdays, as well as Fridays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; admission is free. A visit to the museum is therefore tied to specific days and hours. If you plan to include the museum, check the opening hours and admission again before your trip, as both details may change.

The Scottsburg Courthouse Square Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district with 48 contributing buildings and eight contributing objects. Its development took place roughly from 1873 to 1952. Notable examples include Italianate, Romanesque Revival, Gothic Revival, and Stick Style and Eastlake. The many buildings and objects, along with the various architectural styles, give the district a different focus than a single museum visit: here, an entire historic ensemble takes center stage.

The Scott County Courthouse is also part of the town’s history. It was built in 1873–1874, after Scott County decided to locate its county seat centrally within the county; this decision led to the founding of Scottsburg. This connects the history of the county seat with the creation of the city. The construction years of the courthouse and the development period of the Historic District serve different chronological purposes: the years 1873–1874 refer to the construction of the courthouse, while the span from roughly 1873 to 1952 describes the development of the district.

Parks with different highlights

William H. Graham Park features a walking path around the lake and an old interurban railcar. The walking path and historic railcar offer two different points of interest there; check local conditions before your visit. Linza Graham Park has a seasonal outdoor splash pad for children. Unlike the park features at William H. Graham Park, this amenity is seasonal. Since operating dates can change, it’s a good idea to check the current schedule before making plans.
