Marshall County: Lakes, History and Culture
Accommodation in Marshall County
Lake Maxinkuckee is Indiana’s second-largest natural lake. On its shore is the 1,800-acre campus of Culver Academies. The Culver Academies Museum is dedicated to the beginnings of Culver Military Academy and features rare artifacts. The area thus combines a distinctive landscape with a glimpse into the academy’s history.
Lake Maxinkuckee and Water Activities
Culver Marina offers boat tours on Lake Maxinkuckee and rents stand-up paddleboards and kayaks. There is also public access to the lake on the west shore. If you plan to use it during your visit, check the access conditions before setting out. This lets you plan your time on the water around a specific offering or a public access point.
Trails and Outdoor Activities
Potawatomi Wildlife Park has nearly five miles of trails, open daily from sunrise to sunset. A shorter designated route is the 2.1-mile Plymouth Greenways Trail along the Yellow River. The different lengths make it easier to choose an outing based on how far you want to walk. Potawatomi Wildlife Park also has a limited number of canoes and kayaks available to rent on the Tippecanoe River.
The activities described range from trails on land to offerings on two different bodies of water: boat tours and rentals at Culver Marina, and canoes and kayaks on the Tippecanoe River at Potawatomi Wildlife Park. These differences are useful when deciding whether you would prefer to plan a lake tour, a paddling opportunity, or time on the trails during your stay.
Events in Plymouth
The Marshall County Blueberry Festival takes place annually over Labor Day weekend at Centennial Park in Plymouth. The festival also includes the annual Blueberry Stomp, with 5- or 15-kilometer distances. The two distances offer different race routes as part of the same event. If the festival is a reason for your trip, plan around Labor Day weekend and check the event dates.
History and Cultural Traces
The Chief Menominee Statue was erected by the State of Indiana on September 4, 1909, as a memorial to the Potawatomi. The Trail of Death begins at this statue south of Plymouth. The Marshall County Barn Quilt Trail is Indiana’s first Barn Quilt Trail. These three topics offer distinct points of interest: a memorial, a historic route, and a cultural trail.
The Culver Park Department grounds include a beach house, a railroad depot, and two open pavilions. In Bremen, the restored B&O Depot displays railroad memorabilia, tools, and several interpretive exhibits. Those interested in local transportation history will find two different perspectives here: structures on the Culver Park Department grounds and a collection related to railroads in Bremen.
Museums, Gallery, and Creative Offerings
The Bremen History Center is open Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and by appointment; admission is free. Exhibits include postal memorabilia, scale models, historic artifacts, and photographs. The MoonTree Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. As opening hours can change, check visiting hours in advance.
MoonTree Studios offers art experiences and intensive courses led by experienced artists. These offerings complement museum visits with a hands-on artistic perspective. When planning, you can decide whether you are mainly interested in collections and historic objects or are looking for a guided art experience.
Film, Theater, and Motorsports
The Tri-Way Drive-In Theatre opened on June 4, 1953, and is one of the few remaining drive-in theaters in Indiana. The REES Theatre hosts concerts, screens films, and offers community theater. Plymouth Speedway has a banked, three-eighths-mile asphalt track. Together, these venues offer different forms of entertainment: films at a drive-in, stage and concert programming, and motorsports.
