Kosciusko County brings together natural areas, cultural sites, and local history, each offering a different focus. For planning, you might consider wetlands and birdlife, woodland trails, museums, and crafts as distinct themes. This can help you decide which places and activities suit your stay.

Natural Areas and Seasonal Highlights

The Tri-County Fish & Wildlife Area covers 3,546 acres of land and 650 acres of lakes and water impoundments. The area attracts osprey, bald eagles, great blue and green herons, sandhill cranes, and migratory waterbirds; sightings vary by season. Designated trails include the Greider Woods Nature Trail and the Pisgah Marsh Boardwalk.

The Wildwood Nature Preserve is characterized by high-quality oak-hickory forest on rolling terrain. Several trails lead through forest, wetlands, and prairie plantings. Oppenheim Woods Nature Preserve also has wooded hills; wildflowers and migratory birds are especially prominent there in April and May. Information about these areas offers different nature themes for planning: waterways and seasonal birdwatching in the Tri-County area, forest and wetlands at Wildwood, and a distinctive springtime focus at Oppenheim Woods.

Gardens, Museums, and Special Places

The Warsaw Biblical Gardens cover about three-quarters of an acre and contain more than one hundred plants mentioned in the Bible. Guided tours are offered from May 15 through September 15; check the dates before your trip.

The Bell Aircraft Museum displays a replica of Lawrence Bell’s personal museum, along with images of Bell Aircraft from World War II. Exhibits may change. A historical marker in Mentone identifies Lawrence D. Bell as one of America’s most important aviation pioneers and records that he founded Bell Aircraft Corporation in Buffalo, New York, in 1935.

The Mentone Egg is considered the world’s largest egg. It weighs 3,000 pounds and is about 10 feet tall. In Oswego, the Pound Store Museum is housed in the oldest commercial building in Kosciusko County. The ground floor recreates the atmosphere and appearance of the original Pound General Store. Together, these offer two very different cultural themes: an unusual landmark and a glimpse into a historic commercial building.

Crafts, Trails, and Events

Warsaw Cut Glass has been located in its original building in downtown Warsaw since 1911. The company is one of the last in the United States to cut glass and offer hand-cut crystal gifts. Glass-cutting demonstrations are available by appointment; arrange a time in advance.

The Village at Winona is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Cycling and hiking are available there on trails and along a greenway. Numerous concerts, performances, and festivals take place throughout the year. If you want to combine culture and activity, these offerings can provide different reasons to visit.

The Kosciusko County Community Fair holds an annual event that celebrates agricultural traditions and gives young people practical experience. This connects regional agriculture with an educational component specifically focused on hands-on experience.
