A courthouse dating to 1845, a museum with more than 10,000 collection items, and protected river and wetland landscapes give Woodford County a varied visitor appeal. Historic sites and museums take center stage in Metamora and Eureka, while nature preserves and trails offer other perspectives on the region. The themes that shape your trip can also help guide your search for a suitable hotel location.

Courthouses, Museums, and Places of Remembrance

The Metamora Courthouse was built in 1845 and served as the center of county government until the county seat moved to Eureka in 1896. It is one of two surviving courthouses on the historic Eighth Judicial Circuit, which Abraham Lincoln traveled. The exhibits explore early regional history, the court system of the 1850s, and Lincoln’s life on the Eighth Judicial Circuit. Visitors can tour the courthouse on Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m.; check the current schedule before your visit.

At Eureka College, the Ronald Reagan Museum takes visitors through several chapters of Reagan’s life: its collection of more than 10,000 items spans his time as a student at the college, his work in film and television, his tenure as governor of California, and his two terms as president of the United States. The historic campus is also home to the Reagan Peace Garden. Its features include a bust of the 40th president and a section of the Berlin Wall.

The Reagan Museum has specific visiting hours: it is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, visits are by appointment only, and must be arranged at least 72 hours in advance; the museum is closed on holidays. As opening hours may change, it is worth checking before planning your visit.

The Hunzinger Museum in Roanoke offers further insight into local history. Its collections include artifacts from Indigenous peoples, butterflies, an extensive stamp collection, and photographs. In Metamora, the Adlai E. Stevenson I Home is a museum from the American Civil War era, one block from the town square.

Local Markets and Events

Metamora’s events calendar includes seasonal celebrations, parades, farmers markets, and local concerts. In downtown Eureka, the Farmers Market takes place on selected Saturdays during the season. Offerings range from fresh produce, baked goods, flowers, and plants to handmade goods, crafts, and food; the selection of vendors may vary by date. Since events are seasonal or limited to selected Saturdays, check the dates before your trip.

River Landscapes and Nature Preserves

Woodford State Fish and Wildlife Area lies on the eastern bank of the Illinois River and covers 2,900 acres, of which 2,462 acres are water. More than 3 miles of marked trails are available for hiking and cross-country skiing. Seasonal restrictions apply to the trails. Hunters can access the area from January 1 through October 1.

Spring Bay Fen is the only remaining example of a cold-water, tall-shrub fen along the Illinois River in the state of Illinois. The area is home to rare plants and provides habitat for wood ducks, herons, great egrets, bullfrogs, garter snakes, and beavers. The fen is also of interest to travelers who want to learn about the diversity of habitats and wildlife.

Chinquapin Bluffs Land and Water Reserve encompasses twelve natural communities, including dry hill prairie, sand prairie, wet seeps, swamp, and wooded floodplain. At the preserve, the Sam Leman Canoe Launch gives paddlers access to the Mackinaw River. The adjoining parking lot also serves as an access point to the eastern part of the preserve; trails begin about 100 yards to the south.

Letcher Basin Land and Water Reserve also includes a stretch of the Mackinaw River: 1.5 miles of the river lie within the preserve, which provides habitat for endangered and threatened species. Access is from the north via County Road 1975E, also known as Denman Road. A small, informal parking area for visitors is located there. As parking conditions may change, check before your visit.

In Metamora, Black Partridge Park spans 450 acres. Its features include wooded areas, deep ravines, sports fields, playground equipment, pavilions, and an extensive trail network. The park offers both natural areas and facilities for sports and play.

The Bike Trail & Walking Path in El Paso is a 5.4-mile bike and pedestrian trail. It begins 1.5 miles north of El Paso, runs to South Pointe Park, and passes through the community. Lake Eureka, within the city limits of Eureka, has a city park with a playground and public day-use facilities.
