Discover Crete: Parks, Sports and History
Accommodation in Crete
Crete offers a range of ways to plan your trip, including outdoor activities, sports and local history. Swiss Valley Park has a fitness trail and a tennis court; another point of interest is the historic building of the Crete Congregational Church. Other offerings include sledding, baseball and a StoryWalk available for a limited time. You can choose the topics that interest you during your stay.
Getting Around and Outdoor Activities
Crete is in Will County, about 30 miles south of the Chicago Loop. This approximate location places the town within the region. When planning your time there, you can use the activities you’d like to do in Crete as a guide.
Swiss Valley Park is at the corner of Steger Road and Haweswood Drive in Crete. The park currently has an outdoor fitness trail and a tennis court. This gives you two different sports options: working out on the outdoor trail or playing tennis. If staying active is important during your trip, consider which of these activities fits your plans.
Crete Park has a designated sledding hill; sledding is allowed during daylight hours, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you plan to go sledding during your stay, schedule your visit within these hours.
Heritage Park has four baseball fields used for practices and games. The fields therefore accommodate two specific baseball activities. Compared with the fitness trail and tennis court at Swiss Valley Park, this is another sport with its own uses.
A StoryWalk on the Peter Halligan Nature Trail
A StoryWalk takes place on the Peter Halligan Nature Trail: you walk along the trail while experiencing a book. From September 6 to November 30, 2026, the featured book is “Leave Me Alone” by Vera Brosgol. This combines walking on the trail with a reading activity. If this program determines your travel dates, plan your visit during this period.
Buildings and Local History
The old Crete Congregational Church building is in downtown Crete and is being restored so that it can serve as a museum and community center. The building was constructed in 1853 by the Crete Congregational Church. In 2018, the National Park Service listed it as a historic site on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Trail. The years mark different milestones: 1853 is when the building was constructed, while 2018 is when it was later added to the trail; a museum and community center are its intended future uses after the ongoing restoration.
The Crete Area Historical Society hosts informational talks on local history throughout the year, including Cemetery Walks. A guided walk through Adams Cemetery includes a talk by the Society. This offers different ways to focus on history: talks about local history and a guided walk that includes a talk. If you plan to attend a particular talk or walk, check its date before your trip.
