Discover Grayville: River, Park, and Local History
Accommodation in Grayville
Grayville is situated on a backwater, two miles from the Wabash River. The Wabash can be reached by kayak or canoe via Bonpas Creek, a tributary. Water, local history, and the facilities at Grayville Memorial Park offer different ways to experience the destination. If you’re looking for hotels in Grayville, these themes can help you choose what to explore based on the experiences you want to shape your stay.
Backwater and Wabash River
Grayville’s boat launch is on a backwater of the Wabash River and serves as a launch point for human-powered boats and small recreational boats exploring the 503-mile river. The Wabash can be reached from Grayville by kayak or canoe via its tributary, Bonpas Creek. This makes the backwater launch and access to the river via the tributary two distinct ways to connect with the water. Grayville Memorial Park also has a paved, fairly steep boat ramp.
Park and Recreation
Grayville Memorial Park offers access to trails, a picnic pavilion, and a playground. The park is also home to Grayville Memorial Park Swimming Pool, with water slides and a diving board. This gives visitors a choice of distinct recreational spots: trails, a picnic pavilion, a playground, and a swimming pool. Hilltop Campground is also located in the park, on a wooded hill above the Wabash River. It has 15 sites, each with water and electricity hookups.
Local History and Remembrance
Grayville’s history is closely tied to the river. Historically, a landing was built on the riverbank, where flatboats carried people and goods along the river. A natural harbor made Grayville an early transportation hub for settlers and early trade. The landing represents the practical transportation of people and goods by water, while the harbor reflects the town’s early role in transportation and trade.
Groff Memorial Library & Museum includes a small museum area dedicated to displaying and interpreting artifacts relating to the history and prehistory of the Grayville area. The Veterans Memorial at Oak Grove Cemetery on Old Illinois Route 130 features a black granite marker, benches, flags, and a U.S. Army 105 mm howitzer. The memorial also includes an Adopt-A-Veteran program, through which people can adopt a veteran from years past. The museum focuses on the area’s past, while the memorial honors veterans.
