Mount Carmel brings together local history, art and a variety of recreational opportunities. There is also the Wabash River, parks and a campus with a lake and wooded trails. When looking for a hotel, first consider whether you want to focus your stay mainly on museums, events, the river or the surrounding nature. This will help you narrow your choices to the topics that interest you.

Nature and scenery around Mount Carmel

Nearby, Beall Woods is designated a National Natural Landmark and is one of Illinois’ oldest designated nature preserves. The visitor center features exhibits about the property’s history and native flora and fauna. The preserve and its exhibits give the area a natural character distinct from Mount Carmel’s historical and cultural attractions.

The city itself also offers a variety of landscapes. Froman Park has shady areas beneath lush trees. Wabash Valley College sits on a scenic 120-acre campus with a lake and wooded trails. At Riverview Stadium near Mt. Carmel High School, an elevated setting meets views across the Wabash River; the naturally landscaped stadium is near Mount Carmel’s oldest street.

Museums, art and local history

The Wabash County Museum brings together rotating exhibits about the Lone Ranger, the history of oil production, railroads, local history and the lives of local families. A railroad exhibit features train memorabilia, model train cars and a working model railroad. It highlights both regional topics and engaging details of railroad history.

One local biography tells the story of radio announcer Brace Bell Beemer, a Mount Carmel native. He later played the Lone Ranger on Detroit radio station WXYZ. Another historical landmark is the Wabash County Soldiers Monument, erected by the Grand Army of the Republic in 1906 to commemorate people who died in all wars.

The gallery at the Brubeck Arts Center features works by local and regional artists in a range of media and styles. The Arts Center’s theater supports and presents both professional touring productions and locally produced performances. The Brubeck Arts Center is also one of the stops on tours of the Wabash Valley College campus; check the schedule in advance, as visit details may change.

In the Market Street District, the Murals + Art Team of Market Street MTC is planning murals on buildings. Proposed themes range from important moments in Mount Carmel’s history to colorful abstract designs. Music is also part of local cultural life: Music at the Park is a free annual concert series held at Merchants Park in a family-friendly atmosphere. Dates and performers may vary.

Recreation by the river and in town

The Wabash River along Mount Carmel offers opportunities for boating. West Berwick Golf Club is a municipal 18-hole golf course in Mount Carmel. At Mount Carmel City Pool, ground-level access makes it possible to enter without a ladder or steps. These offerings are quite distinct, ranging from activities on the river to golf and a pool with a specifically described access feature.

Wabash Roots ’N’ Que includes group dulcimer playing and lessons. The Wabash County Farmers Market brings local farmers and entrepreneurs together at a central gathering place, where handmade and homegrown products are sold directly to consumers. Together with the parks, art and historical sites, these offer a range of themes to help you plan your trip.
