Calumet City: Parks, Trails and History
Accommodation in Calumet City
Calumet City combines recreational activities in parks with trails and locally rooted history. To plan your trip, you can first decide which focus suits your stay: water activities and mini golf, outdoor exercise, or historical exhibits and events. The locations offer different starting points, so you can tailor your search for things to do to your own interests.
Parks and Recreation
The Fun Center has a splash pool, while the Sandridge Fitness/Community Center has an indoor pool and an outdoor running track. Finneran Park has a 127-foot-long water slide. The listed amenities therefore differ both in the type of water facility and in whether they include outdoor exercise. Check the facilities’ current operating status before visiting.
There are also clearly identifiable destinations beyond the water activities: Memorial Park has a 9-hole miniature golf course, Commissioners Park has a skate park, and Downey Park has an outdoor performing arts area. These amenities are located in different parks, so be sure to associate each one with the park named.
Trails Through Calumet City
The paved Burnham Greenway Trail System also runs through Calumet City and has an estimated total length of 11.5 miles. The Thorn Creek Trail System also runs through Calumet City and includes an estimated 23.5 miles of paved and unpaved trails. The two systems can therefore be compared by two specific features: their stated total lengths and the trail surfaces.
If the surface matters to your choice, Thorn Creek, with its paved and unpaved trails, differs from the paved Burnham Greenway. Commissioners Park provides accessible access to the Burnham Greenway, a pedestrian and bicycle path. Cleveland Park is also connected to the Burnham Greenway. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
History and Events
The tree-surrounded Heritage Cabin stands on the banks of the Little Calumet River. Its lower section is estimated to date to the 1830s; based on the saw marks, the upper section is thought to have been built in the 1860s. These dates therefore distinguish between the two sections rather than giving a single construction year for the entire cabin.
The Calumet City Historical Society & Museum displays historical clothing dating from the 1890s to the present and offers seasonal exhibits. These exhibits may change. If you want to visit for a particular exhibit, check the current schedule in advance.
The Calumet City Historical Society Center hosts monthly history programs on the second Sunday at 2 and 3 p.m. The Calumet City Historical Society holds its annual Heritage Day in September at its 1836 log cabin. Since you’re planning to attend a program on a particular date, it’s advisable to check the schedule before traveling.
