Discover Madison County: Culture and Recreation
Accommodation in Madison County
Different themes may play a role in planning your trip. Rexburg offers points of interest ranging from local history and art to geology, theater and seasonal recreational activities. When planning, you can consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay most.
Culture and History in Rexburg
The Museum of Rexburg houses artifacts from Rexburg and the surrounding area. One exhibit focuses on the Teton Dam and the effects of its collapse on June 5, 1976. Local history and a specific event stand side by side: the collection offers a broader look at the area, while the exhibit explores a particular chapter in its history.
Art is also represented: the Jacob Spori Art Gallery displays works by professional artists as well as BYU-Idaho students and faculty. Private tours of the exhibitions are available for groups of 15 or more and can be reserved by email. The Rexburg Community Theatre adds to the cultural offerings with professional, high-quality and affordable family theater. Since its founding in 2007, it has produced more than 30 performances.
Geology, Science and Visit Planning
At the Romney Geology Museum, you can see hundreds of unique rocks, minerals and fossils. Guided tours have a special access rule: during the summer and semester breaks, the museum is open exclusively for guided tours by prior appointment. If you plan to visit during these periods, arrange your appointment in advance.
The BYU-Idaho Planetarium offers public and private shows. For the public shows on Thursdays, tickets are sold at the door starting at 6:30 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. If one of these shows fits your plans, check the latest information before your trip. The planetarium and the geology museum have different focuses: shows are the main attraction at the former, while the latter centers on rocks, minerals and fossils.
Other named locations include the Thomas E. Ricks Horticulture Demonstration Gardens. The ten-acre garden is used by the school and surrounding communities. Its size and use distinguish it from a museum collection or a stage performance; it is a separate feature of the campus surroundings.
Seasonal Recreation and Parks
The Idaho Centennial Carousel operates every year from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Rexburg Rapids has a different seasonal schedule: it operates annually from early June through late August. If you would like to plan your trip around either attraction, compare their respective operating periods and check them before your trip. The periods are similar but not identical.
Yellowstone Bear World also offers two different experiences. The petting zoo spans more than one acre and includes free-roaming farm animals. On the Wildlife Excursion, a professional animal keeper takes visitors close to elk, bison, black bears and grizzly bears. This presents a farm animal area and a guided wildlife viewing experience as clearly distinct options.
For time outdoors, Rexburg’s municipal park system offers nine parks with a total of more than 86 acres of parkland. The city parks are open from sunrise to 10:00 p.m. The scale of the park system and its set opening hours give you a concrete point of reference for planning your day, without requiring you to choose a particular park.
