Lāhainā brings together the history of a former capital and important whaling port with a coastal park centered on the beach and outdoor activities. From the political history of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi to the stories of different communities, the town offers several historical chapters. At the same time, Hanakaʻōʻō Park offers a different perspective on the coast.

The Lahaina Historic District is designated a National Historic Landmark. It includes both land and sea: the entire historic town center, as well as waters extending one mile offshore from the historic town area. This large designated area gives the historic sites a shared geographic setting.

Historic Sites and Their Stories

The Lāhainā Historic Trail is a self-guided tour of 62 historic sites. Along Front Street, informative bronze plaques point out attractions from Lahaina’s past. Individual plaques or sections may be affected by restoration work, so check current access before planning your route.

Hale Paʻi is a printing museum and archive center. Its original printing press printed the first newspaper published west of the Rocky Mountains on February 14, 1834. If you would like to explore this part of history in person, check current access to Hale Paʻi before your visit.

Hale Aloha is a stone-and-wood building: construction began in 1855 and was completed in 1858. From 1873 to 1892, it served as Lahaina Union School. Hale Paʻahao offers another glimpse into the town’s history; in the 1850s, it was Lahaina’s “new” jail. Lahaina Prison was primarily used to hold sailors for short periods.

Waiola Cemetery became the burial place of later Hawaiian kings and queens, as well as missionary advisers to the Hawaiian monarchy. The Wo Hing Society was established in the early 20th century to support Lahaina’s Chinese expatriate community. Its building has a temple upstairs and a society hall downstairs, which is used as a museum space.

Lahaina Jodo Mission offers another chapter in local history. It was founded in 1912 with the support of many Japanese immigrants who were then working on sugarcane and pineapple plantations. Its complex includes a Great Buddha and a temple bell, both completed in June 1968. The main temple and pagoda were built in 1970.

Banyan Court Park features reconstructed remains of Lahaina Fort. Before visiting Hale Paʻi, Banyan Court Park, Hale Paʻahao, or the Wo Hing Society building, check their current condition and access.

Coast and Travel Planning

Hanakaʻōʻō Park is a beach park on Lahaina’s coast with direct access to a sandy beach. Activities available there include swimming, paddling, canoeing, snorkeling, and beach walks. Seasonal whale watching is also possible in winter. The park offers a coastal focus that is distinct from the historic sites and buildings.

As of March 2026, access to Lahaina Harbor and its surroundings in Zones 11A and 12A was permitted with restrictions during the day. Check current access conditions before your trip. When planning a hotel stay in Lāhainā, first consider whether historic sites, the beach park, or both will shape your stay.
