Oconee can be explored through parks with different types of trails, river landscapes and historic sites. For planning your trip, options range from paved walking paths and sports facilities to exhibits about the pre-Civil War era and railroad construction. The specific lengths and features of the trails can help you compare the parks according to your interests.

Park Trails, Sports and Different Routes

Oconee Veterans Park has outdoor walking trails. A paved multipurpose trail loops around the park and is about two miles long. This makes it easy to think of the route as a loop of its own. The park also has a Bark Park; access is restricted at sunset.

Herman C. Michael Park combines a 1.25-mile paved walking trail with other recreational options: it has two outdoor pickleball courts and a disc golf course. The trail is shorter than the approximately two-mile loop at Oconee Veterans Park. If you want to include different activities in your plans, you’ll find specific options for pickleball and disc golf here as well as a walking trail.

At Bogart Sports Complex, the paved walking trail is about half a mile long. The complex also has six lighted baseball and multipurpose fields. The trail lengths at the three facilities differ considerably: about half a mile at Bogart, 1.25 miles at Herman C. Michael Park and about two miles for the loop at Oconee Veterans Park. These figures describe different routes and should not be equated with walking times.

Ponds, Riverfront and Trails in Watkinsville

At Thomas Farm Preserve in Watkinsville, one mile of paved, wheelchair-accessible, ten-foot-wide trails loops around two ponds. These are distinct from the 2.3 miles of backcountry biking and hiking trails that follow the property boundaries. Along with more than a third of a mile of frontage on Calls Creek, this creates a setting of ponds, creek banks and different types of trails. The trails around the ponds and the longer backcountry routes offer different reference points for planning your visit.

Heritage Park encompasses 364 acres of natural resources, including woods and streams, and is bordered by the Apalachee River. These landscape features give the park a different focus from facilities with designated paved walking trails or sports fields.

Watkinsville Woods is a six-acre nature park. A wooded walking trail leads to a historic spring. The woods and spring add to the range of natural sites described, offering a smaller area with a specific destination along the trail.

The restored building is furnished with period-appropriate items and exhibits, and is dedicated to a museum about the pre-Civil War era and the period before railroad construction. The focus is on an era when wagon and stagecoach traffic was at its peak.

In 2025, Eagle Tavern Museum offered public tours Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you’re planning a visit, check the current tour times so you can align your plans with the information that applies to your visit date.

Oconee County Welcome Center is also housed in a historic building: it is located in the William Daniell House, dating to around 1790. The house combines visitor information with another historic site in Oconee.

Oconee Farmers Market brings together different aspects of local offerings. It has fresh produce, prepared foods, eggs and crafts; music is also offered. Alongside parks and history, food and crafts can be part of your visit.
