Fayette: Trails, Lakes and History
Accommodation in Fayette
Fayette County is located about 15 miles south of Atlanta in the Metro Atlanta area. You can choose from a range of activities for your trip: trails along streams and lakes, parks with opportunities for walking or boating, as well as historic sites and a guided studio tour. The different trail lengths and surfaces help you plan outdoor days to suit your plans.
Trails, Lakes and Parks
Whitewater Creek Nature Area has a 1,000-foot ADA-accessible multi-use trail and a soft-surface nature trail. Along Whitewater Creek, you’ll also find scenic spots for photography and birdwatching. The options range from a trail specifically designated as ADA-accessible to a nature trail with a soft surface and a different character.
Lake Horton Park offers 2.8 miles of paved walking trails. Together with the trails along Whitewater Creek, these let you plan a shorter or longer route and take different surfaces into account. Kenwood Park has trails for walking and jogging.
Lake McIntosh is a 650-acre reservoir on Line Creek. Lake McIntosh Park is the only public access point to the lake and offers walking trails as well as a boat ramp with two boat docks. Lake Kedron Park also has a boat ramp and boat docks, along with a playground area. If you’re comparing parks by activity, Lake McIntosh has designated walking trails, while both parks have boating facilities.
Peachtree City is a destination in its own right for trails: its shared-use network stretches more than 100 miles. It serves pedestrians, cyclists and golf carts and runs through wooded greenways and along scenic lakes. At Prime Community Park, a winding trail about a mile long leads to the center of a labyrinth. The trail’s length and destination make this walk a different kind of outing from the trails by lakes or streams.
History, Downtown and Studio Tour
Fayetteville brings together several historic points of interest and a downtown event venue. Fayette County Courthouse in Fayetteville was built in 1825 and is the oldest courthouse in Georgia. Fayetteville Train Depot dates to 1902. In the historic downtown district, the area is known as “Main Street”; outdoor events take place there throughout the year.
Starr’s Mill also tells the story of the area’s history. The current building was constructed by William T. Glower in 1907. The site included a cotton gin and a dynamo that supplied electricity to the nearby town of Senoia. Starr’s Mill Park is used for fishing, family gatherings and picnics. This makes it possible to distinguish the history of the mill site from the park’s uses today.
For a different kind of activity, there’s the Trilith Foundation Studio Tour Experience: the 1.5-hour guided trolley tour goes through Trilith Studios in Fayetteville, Georgia. Its set duration and guided trolley format make it easy to plan separately from a visit to downtown or an outing to a park.
