Defuniak Springs: Cultural History and Lakes
Accommodation in Defuniak Springs
Defuniak Springs offers cultural and historical attractions and activities on the water. An important historical connection is the site of the Florida Chautauqua Assembly; at Lake DeFuniak, highlights include a walking trail, paddling, and a designated swimming area with seasonal rules. Other attractions include the Walton County Heritage Museum, a public swimming area at Lake Stanley Park, wine tastings, and the annual LakeFest.
Chautauqua History and Historic District
The former enclosed resort and campus grounds of the Florida Chautauqua Assembly in DeFuniak Springs opened in 1885 and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Their former use and historic designation give the site a clear cultural focus. If you are interested in the region’s history, the grounds offer a tangible connection to the Florida Chautauqua Assembly.
You can explore the Historic District on a walking tour with 17 information panels throughout the grounds. The history unfolds across several stops along the way. This distinguishes the tour from a museum visit, where collections and exhibits provide the framework. The history unfolds across several stops along the way. The Walton County Heritage Museum has been housed in the former L&N Train Depot since 2002; the city restored the depot in 2000. The museum features artifacts, photographs, and stories spanning the period from early settlement to modern times. Two aspects are of interest for understanding the timeline: the station building’s restoration was followed by its use as a museum, while the museum’s exhibits span a broad period from early settlement to the present day.
Lake DeFuniak: Walking Trail, Paddling, and Swimming
Chipley Park surrounds Lake DeFuniak, a natural, spring-fed lake covering 40 acres. A paved, one-mile path around the lake runs through the park. If you’re planning a walk by the water, the path’s length and surface provide a clear sense of what to expect. Chipley Park is also designated as a location on the Florida Birding Trail. This gives birdwatchers another point of interest connected to the lake and walking trail.
Visitors can launch a canoe or kayak from the boat ramp on the western shore, next to the historic Chautauqua building. The walking trail and access by canoe or kayak offer different ways to include the lake in your visit: one follows the water on foot, while the other starts at the designated boat ramp.
Swimming in a designated area of Lake DeFuniak is permitted daily from March 1 through September 30, from 8 a.m. until sunset. Check this seasonal rule locally before your visit. Another park, Lake Stanley Park, has a public swimming area. This swimming area is separate from the time-limited swimming rule at Lake DeFuniak.
Wine Tastings and LakeFest
Visitors can sample wine at Chautauqua Winery. LakeFest is an annual festival in Defuniak Springs at Lake DeFuniak. The tasting and the festival offer different reasons to visit: planning for LakeFest depends on the date of that year’s event. Check the dates if you’d like to plan your trip around the festival.
