Bee Ridge: Local History and Historic Wooden Buildings
Accommodation in Bee Ridge
Bee Ridge brings together the history of its early community, historic wooden buildings, and Bee Ridge Park. When planning your trip, these topics are best considered separately: dates put historical events in context, construction methods and styles describe different features of the buildings, and the park’s area offers a different scale. You can plan your stay around local history, architecture, or the park.
History of the Early Community
Bee Ridge Baptist Church was founded in 1913. The Bee Ridge Woman's Club is one of the few surviving structures from Bee Ridge’s early community. These two details offer different historical points of reference: for the church, the founding year is key; for the Woman's Club, it is the survival of an early building. Together, they provide insight into the early community through a dated event and a surviving building.
The name Bee Ridge also comes from the high inland sand ridges and swamps, as well as the large number of bee swarms. The Sarasota-Venice Company promoted Bee Ridge as a place where people could make their fortune in agriculture. The name and the promotion answer different questions: the former explains the place name through the landscape and bee swarms, while the latter shows the agricultural hopes used to promote Bee Ridge.
Wooden Buildings and Their History
The Little White Church is a wood-frame church in the Gothic Revival style. Wood-frame describes its construction method; Gothic Revival describes its style. Gothic Revival is a later revival of Gothic forms; it describes the design, not the material. This distinction separates the building’s structural classification from its architectural style. The Albritton family restored the Little White Church in 1989.
The Tatum House in Bee Ridge is a simple wooden house built by William Harvey Tatum around 1890. It still stands on its original wooden foundation piers. Comparing the buildings highlights different historical details: for the Little White Church, the focus is on its church form, style, and restoration; for the Tatum House, it is on its simple design, builder, and surviving foundation piers.
The dates also refer to different events: the Tatum House was built around 1890, Bee Ridge Baptist Church was founded in 1913, and the Little White Church was restored in 1989. The date around 1890 is approximate; the other two details give specific years. The sequence runs from an early house construction to the founding of the church and then to the later restoration.
Park and App Tour
Bee Ridge Park covers 10 acres, or about four hectares. The conversion makes the area easier to put in context and shows a different scale from the building history: the park is about an area, while the buildings are about individual structural features. The Bee Ridge tour is also available for free through the app.
