Accommodation in Milton
If you’re looking for a hotel in Milton, it’s worth first sorting out your interests for your travel days. The downtown Historic District, trails, river scenery, and recreational activities offer different experiences. The history, trail lengths, and activities can help you compare these options.
Historic Downtown and Riverwalk
Milton’s Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. At the same time, the downtown area reflects the rebuilding that followed the devastating fires of 1885, 1892, and 1909. The historical development after the fires and the district’s later addition to the register therefore belong to two different points in time. An educational brochure for a walking tour of the district is also available.
The Milton Riverwalk is also in the downtown historic district and features a boardwalk along the Blackwater River. The downtown’s history and a riverside trail are therefore different aspects of the same district. If you’re focusing on history, the Riverwalk adds a riverside perspective.
Trails, River, and Nature
The Blackwater Heritage State Trail is 8.1 miles long, paved, and designated a National Recreation Trail. It’s suitable for biking, running, walking, and skating. Its length gives you a concrete measure for planning, and the trail isn’t limited to just one type of activity.
At Blackwater River State Park, you can canoe, kayak, camp, picnic, and walk along wooded nature trails. The Blackwater River there is usually transparent and golden-brown, contrasting with the white sandbars. Compared with the paved trail, the park also offers water activities and paths through wooded natural areas.
The Panhandle Butterfly House includes the historic T.W. Jones House Education Center. It also has a quarter-mile nature trail alongside the Blackwater River. Compared with the 8.1-mile Blackwater Heritage State Trail, the difference in trail length is clear: here, a short nature trail contrasts with a much longer route.
Paddling is possible from the Old River Canoe Launch at Russell Harber Landing Park. Russell Harber Landing has two boat ramps and a central swimming dock. The details distinguish between a named launch for paddling and a facility with ramps and a swimming dock.
Recreational Activities for Different Interests
Carpenter’s Park has play equipment for children. The children’s train at the West Florida Railroad Museum is open to children ages 3 to 12, weather permitting. This activity is therefore subject to both an age range and weather conditions.
At the West Florida Railroad Museum, you can also visit L&N Dining Car No. 2722, which is available to rent for private events. Steven Morgan Skate Park is free and open seven days a week. In addition to activities for children, options for different recreational interests include a skate park and a historic dining car.
Veterans Memorial Plaza is dedicated to United States veterans. Theophalis May restored Milton’s Imogene Theatre. The plaza serves as a memorial, while the restoration provides a distinct connection to the city’s theater history.
