When comparing hotels for your stay, these highlights can help you get a sense of the character of your trip. Dr. P. Phillips Community Park and the LongHorn Steakhouse Loop offer different perspectives on nature and recreation.

Lakefront, Upland, and Trail

Dr. P. Phillips Community Park is located on the shore of Big Sand Lake. The LongHorn Steakhouse Loop passes through about 10 acres of upland habitat; sand pine scrub is one of the plant communities along the trail. A viewpoint overlooking Big Sand Lake is located by the loop’s lakeshore section. This brings upland habitat and lakefront views together along the same route.

The loop is 0.6 miles long. This figure describes the trail distance, while the approximately 10 acres refers to the upland habitat it passes through. The measurements therefore represent different aspects: one is the trail’s length, the other the area of the habitat. Gopher tortoises prefer high, dry sandy areas in Dr. Phillips Community Park. This habitat preference adds a specific wildlife connection to the description of the uplands.

Sports at the Community Park

Dr. P. Phillips Community Park has sports fields for baseball, basketball, and soccer. This adds a sports focus alongside the nature trail: the fields are designated for these three sports, while the LongHorn Steakhouse Loop focuses on the landscape, trail distance, and views. The park opened in December 2007. As of July 2024, Dr. Phillips Community Park also had a splash pad and a dog park; park amenities may change over time.

Swimming and Fitness at the YMCA

The Dr. P. Phillips YMCA is located at the intersection of Dr. Phillips Boulevard and Wallace Road. It has a splash pad and two outdoor pools. The outdoor pools are used for lap swimming, swimming lessons, and recreational swimming. The YMCA also offers a variety of group fitness classes throughout the week. Access is subject to YMCA policies, and class times may change. If you plan to swim or work out, check the current access requirements and class times before visiting.

Community History and Theater

Under Howard’s leadership, the Dr. Phillips community became the first master-planned community in Central Florida. Another cultural destination is Theatre South Playhouse, whose performances take place at Dr. Phillips Marketplace. Productions are listed for the main stage for 2026; the program changes seasonally. If you plan to attend a performance, coordinate your travel plans with the specific dates on the schedule. “Master-planned” describes a community whose development follows an overarching plan.
