Twelve notable springs feed the Wacissa River; popular swimming spots such as Big Blue Spring lie along the river. Jefferson County also offers trails through natural areas and historic places in Monticello. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first consider whether water activities, wildlife watching, hiking, or history will shape your trip.

Wacissa River: Springs and Water Activities

The Wacissa River is suitable for beginners to paddle, as well as for swimming and snorkeling. The twelve springs that feed the river make its swimming spots a distinctive feature of the landscape. Popular places by the water include Big Blue Spring.

Recreational activities at Wacissa River County Park include boating, swimming, canoeing, and picnicking. Check the park’s current facilities before your visit. Fishing opportunities on the Wacissa River include Florida bass, Suwannee bass, and various species of bream. The river thus offers different reasons to spend time by the water—from paddling to fishing.

Wildlife and Trails in the Aucilla Area

The Aucilla Wildlife Management Area lies between the Aucilla River and the Wacissa River. It is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail; wading birds, turtles, and alligators are frequently spotted there. The Middle Aucilla Wildlife Management Area protects the Aucilla River watershed across more than 2,000 acres. The two protected areas therefore represent different nature themes: one for its location between two rivers and wildlife watching, the other for watershed protection.

When planning a visit to the Aucilla Wildlife Management Area, it’s also important to note the limited restroom locations: they are only at Goose Pasture and at the headwaters of the Wacissa River.

Several named trails run through the landscape in the Aucilla area. The Aucilla River and Sinks section of the Florida Trail is about 21.3 miles long, including road sections. Sections of the Florida National Scenic Trail there also include the Aucilla Sinks Trail and the Aucilla River Trail. The latter is 7.1 miles long and follows the east bank of the Aucilla River. The distances help compare the routes’ scope: the roughly 21.3 miles include road sections, while the 7.1 miles refer to the route of the Aucilla River Trail.

The river itself also shapes the route description: over an eight-mile stretch, the Aucilla River appears in a sequence of “rises” and “sinks” and disappears again. This changing sequence is a distinctive landscape feature for anyone interested in the river’s course.

Monticello: Archaeology, Architectural History, and Culture

Letchworth-Love Mounds Archaeological State Park is home to the tallest Native American ceremonial mound in Florida. It was built between 1,100 and 1,800 years ago. The park also offers picnicking, birdwatching, and hiking. This combines the site’s archaeological significance with outdoor activities.

The Monticello Opera House is a historic, two-story building constructed in 1890. Its year-round program features concerts, plays, musicals, dinner theater, and children’s theater. The venue adds a varied cultural program to the historic attractions.

The Old Jail in Monticello was completed in 1909 and served as a jail until 1971. In 2013, a decision was made to reopen it as a local history museum. Old Howard Academy in Monticello, Jefferson County, is listed on the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places; its listing was announced on October 22, 2021.

Monticello’s historic district covers 27 city blocks and about 600 buildings dating from before 1930. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The number of buildings and the time period convey the district’s scope; its listing complements the Opera House’s individual architectural history with a view of a larger historic ensemble.

Routes and Local Offerings

The Miccosukee-Magnolia Trail runs through northwestern Jefferson County. It follows several county roads, passing plantations, historic sites, and recreation areas. The route description thus covers both road sections and points of interest in the landscape and in local history.

At Aunt Louise’s Farm, the excursion program includes animal encounters, a barrel train, and a rubber duck race. Monticello Market is a community of growers, bakers, and craftspeople. Offerings include sustainably grown fruits and vegetables, flower bouquets, pasture-raised meat, sourdough breads, honey, and specialty products; participating vendors and the selection may vary.
