Discover Lutz: Nature Trails and Historic Sites
Accommodation in Lutz
For a stay in Lutz, nature trails and historic sites can offer different focal points for planning your trip. Two preserves offer hiking trails through a range of habitats. There is also the Lutz Lake Fern Trailhead, with parking and restrooms, as well as historic buildings.
Nature and Trails in Lutz
The Violet Cury Preserve covers 160 acres. Its habitats include pine flatwoods, sandhill habitats, marshland, and oak hammocks. The preserve is also home to Lake Flynn, a freshwater lake. A 2.25-mile hiking trail is considered easy. When assessing a hike, distance and difficulty are two different criteria.
The Brooker Creek Headwaters Nature Preserve covers 1,121 acres, making it significantly larger than the 160-acre Violet Cury Preserve. Its habitats include oak hammocks, pine forests, grassland, and cypress swamps. The marked hiking trail runs through the natural habitats and is 4.3 miles long. It is therefore almost twice as long as the 2.25-mile trail at Violet Cury Preserve. When comparing the two, area and trail length are separate measurements: acres describe the size of the preserve, while miles describe the length of the trail.
Trailhead Information
Practical information also differs. There is no parking lot at Violet Cury Preserve; parking is available along Sinclair Hills Road, by the fence next to the preserve entrance. At Brooker Creek Headwaters Nature Preserve, a small parking lot, an information kiosk, and a picnic table are on the west side of Ramblewood Road. You can factor the parking arrangements at each site into your plans.
The Lutz Lake Fern Trailhead of the Upper Tampa Bay Trail is located at 7020 Lutz Lake Fern Road. Parking and restrooms are on the south side of the road, east of Gunn Highway and west of the Veterans Expressway. These location details supplement the address with the side of the road and two additional landmarks.
Lutz Memorial Park also has a walking trail. You can include it as another option for a walk in your travel plans.
Historic Sites
The Old Lutz Schoolhouse offers a historical point of interest. Located at 18819 U.S. Highway 41 North, it is locally significant for its role in education, its Colonial Revival style, and as a work by locally renowned architect Frank A. Winn. In 1993, it was recognized as one of Hillsborough County's first official landmarks. Its educational connection, architecture, and recognition at the county level all shape its historical significance.
The historic Lutz Train Depot is located in Bullard Park and adds another connection to local history.
