At Jennings Bluff Tract, the connection between surface water and groundwater can be seen along a specific flow path. Water from the Dead River Sink enters the Upper Floridan Aquifer, flows about 10 miles south, and emerges into the Suwannee River at Holton Creek Rise and Alapaha River Rise. Water also shapes the landscape at Big Shoals: the Suwannee River drops over a short stretch there, and the rapids classification depends on the water level.

River Landscapes and Nature

Big Shoals State Park comprises two areas close to each other along the Suwannee River, in southeastern Hamilton County and northwestern Columbia County, near White Springs. Over a stretch of just under 600 feet, the river drops 10 feet. At water levels of 59 to 61 feet, Florida’s only Class III rapids form there. The classification therefore applies under a specific water-level condition and does not describe the river at every water level.

Natural habitats in Twin Rivers State Forest range from sandhills and floodplains to swamps and sinkhole landscapes. Holton Creek is located on a white sand beach along the Suwannee River. The area lies within a 2,500-acre tract of the Suwannee River Water Management District and directly alongside the Florida Trail. This means you’ll encounter a variety of landscapes in the county, from riverbanks and rapids to wetlands and sinkhole areas.

Comparing Hiking Trails

The Florida Trail sections described here differ considerably in length. The Alapaha section is 7.7 miles long and runs along the limestone-lined waters of the Alapaha River and the Suwannee River. The 3.6-mile White Springs section follows a bend in the Suwannee River through a historic community and is suitable for an easy day hike. These figures provide a concrete comparison of trail lengths, but do not indicate how long a hike will take.

Shorter is the 2.4-mile Long Branch Trail in Big Shoals State Park. It runs upstream along the Suwannee River, which is wide there and shaded by overhanging tupelo trees. Along the Disappearing Creek Loop on the Florida Trail beside the Suwannee River, Camp Branch flows through rapids and plunges into a large sinkhole. These trails offer different points of reference for planning: distance, river route, and distinctive landscape features.

Outdoor Activities and Places

Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park offers hiking, biking, canoeing, and wildlife watching. Twin Rivers State Forest has several primitive campsites along multi-use trails that can be reached on foot, by bike, and by canoe. Woods Ferry Tract has the first river campsite on the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail, as well as a canoe launch.

Activities at Jerry Branch Tract are also specifically listed: you can bike, fish, hike, ride horses, and watch wildlife on management roads. The offerings vary by location and activity; canoe launches, camping options, and activities on management roads are each associated with specific tracts.

Culture and Visit Planning

The museum at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park features exhibits about Stephen Foster’s most famous songs. The White Springs Historic District includes 85 contributing resources: 81 buildings, two structures, one site, and one object. The Florida Folk Festival is held annually on Memorial Day weekend at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park. At the 2026 festival, food on offer included fried mullet, curries, gyros, and red beans and rice; the food selection may vary from one festival year to another.

Hamilton County Old Jail is temporarily closed for repairs following storm damage. Check its visitor status in advance if you plan to visit. To reach Hamilton County, you can use U.S. 41 or U.S. 129 as reference routes.
